Addressing Child Obesity in Schools

Introduction

Childhood obesity has become one of the most predominant health problems facing our nation
today. Its prevalence in the United States is such that it is considered an epidemic that has a
powerful, adverse impact on the well-being of our society. Childhood obesity affects all aspects
of a child’s life; most significantly by contributing to poor health and negative social
perceptions by society. Obesity in childhood is associated with serious health conditions.
Obesity have a numerous casual and risk factors. Given the multifaceted nature of the problem,
and its severe implications for the future health and well- being of affected children, I believe
that the most effective solutions will be achieved through programs that focus on prevention
efforts.

Purpose

• The purpose of this letter is to give knowledge to the parents or guardian to monitor
their children’s body mass index (BMI), which provides a guideline of weight in relation
to height, is the accepted measure of overweight and obesity.
• It is also to give knowledge about the program that can help the children to maintain
their normal weight.

Project description

Childhood obesity Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and
adolescents. It's particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path
to health problems that were once considered adult problems — diabetes, high blood pressure
and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression.
One of the best strategies to reduce childhood obesity is to improve the eating and exercise
habits of your entire family. Treating and preventing childhood obesity helps protect your
child's health now and in the future. The following causes are:

• Diet, Regularly eating high-calorie foods, such as fast foods, baked goods and vending
machine snacks, can cause your child to gain weight.

• Lack of exercise. Children who don't exercise much are more likely to gain weight
because they don't burn as many calories.

• Family factors. If your child comes from a family of overweight people, he or she may
be more likely to put on weight.
• Psychological factors. Personal, parental and family stress can increase a child's risk of
obesity. Socioeconomic factors. People in some communities have limited resources and
limited access to supermarkets.

• Certain medications. Some prescription drugs can increase the risk of developing
obesity.

But we still can monitor our child’s health, if we are knowledgeable enough about the programs
or organizations that can our child obesity.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of this paper is to give a guideline to every parents and guardian on how to prevent
their children from being underweight and overweight. There are various programs that work
specifically with children who carry excess weight and their families to help them adopt a healthier
lifestyle (such as MEND, Healthy Weight & Your Child, etc.). As these evidence-based programs are
being disseminated across the country, CATCH has tailored its physical activity programming to
develop a curriculum specific to these programs, separate from our CATCH Kids Club program for
after school and recreation programs. While CATCH is designed for all children, the content developed
for these types of programs is a more prescribed approach to assist activity staff in providing a quality
setting for children and their families to participate in and enjoy physical activity.

The objectives of Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) is to improve nutrition,

increase physical activity, and reduce obesity in preschool, elementary, and middle school aged
children.

Methodology and Timelines

This concept paper proposed that you have to maintain the health of your children and it also
gives you a knowledge about the possible causes of addressing child obesity. But you can still
find a program to help you maintain your child’s health, and the example of this program is the
Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH). And it reported that an evaluation of 3, 714
children from the first CATCH improved diet and physical activity that was maintained 3 years
after participation.

Benefits and Anticipated Outcomes

By participating CATCH, It will have a massive benefits for your children because the CATCH
Program transforms children's health by improving their nutrition, level of physical activity,
classroom environment, and community. CATCH resources allow schools and organizations to
coordinate their health messages in an effective and sustainable way.
