PRACTICE WITH TIME CLAUSES 1

Directions: Combine the two sentences in any order by using the time expression in parentheses.
Underline the time clause in the sentence you write. Pay attention to the verb tense you use in the
time clause.

1. I’ll call Tom tomorrow night. I’ll tell him the good news. (when)
 When I call Tom tomorrow night, I’ll tell him the good news.
or: I’ll tell Tom the good news when I call him tomorrow night.

2. Katie will lock all the doors. She will go to bed. (before)

Katie will lock all the doors before she goes to bed

3. I’m going to be in Paris for two days. I’m going to visit the Louvre. (when)
When I go to Paris for two days, I am going to visit the Louvre

4. The play will start. The curtain will go up. (once)

Once the curtain goes up, the play will start

5. Nancy is going to change the oil in her car. She’s going to take a bath. (after)
Nancy is going to change the oil in her car after she takes a bath
After Nancy goes to change the oil in her car, she is going to take a bath
6. We’ll call you. We’ll come over to pick you up. (before)

Directions: Describe the order of events that will probably happen in the following situations. Use
the time words before, when, and after and the verbs leave, arrive, and begin in your sentences.

1. You’re going to the movies:


Examples: Before I leave home, I’ll eat dinner.
When I arrive, I’ll buy a ticket and some popcorn.
After the movie begins, I’ll eat my popcorn.

2. You’re going to a concert:


Before I leave home, I'll look for the tickets
when the artist begins to sing my favorite song, I'll be very happy
After the concert, I'll arrive home and I'll sleep
3. You’re going to class:
Before the class begins, I'll eat a chocolate
When I leave class, I take a little brake
After class, I arrive my home and study what I have learned
4. You’re going to take an exam:
Before the exam begins, I'll study
When I arrive the exam, I'll breathe and start to solve
After leave the exam, I'll go home

5. You have a job interview:


Before I leave home, I'll dress well
When I arrive, I'll show a good attitude
After the job interview begins, I'll be calm

6. You are going to have dinner with your boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s parents for the first time:
Before I leave my house, I'll look at the clock to see if I am on time
When dinner begins, I'll show they my good manners by eating

7. You’re going to play in a piano recital:


Before leave the recital, I'll find out if everyone liked it
