Hello, before I start this essay, I would like to introduce myself. My name is
Aileen Nathaniela Hendarko, or you can just call me Aileen. I’m a high school
student in Saint Peter’s School from Jakarta, Indonesia. I was able to join this
Summer School Program thanks to my teacher’s recommendation. My purpose of
writing this essay today is to express my thoughts and feelings about the
importance of diversity in friendships.
Since birth, humans interact and socialize with other humans to live.
Whether it’s at work, school, or at home, we develop relationships with others,
such as friendship. Friendship is a bond of mutual trust and affection between
people. From strangers to acquaintances, if two or more people ‘click’, they would
likely form a bond that will transform into friendship. People usually tend to bond
and make friends with other people similar to them, such as similar attitude,
interests, or beliefs.
person Y are friends. They have similar hobbies, but they have different cultural
backgrounds. Or, person A and person B are fans of a famous artist, but they live
in different countries.
Maybe because they grew up where a certain group are stereotyped as ‘evil’
or something, and they chose to believe in that stereotype even though they hadn’t
even personally met with a person from that certain group. In the end, some people
think that diverse friends don’t really matter because they already have their labels
and stereotypes for other groups that are different from them. In reality, having
diverse friend groups are important and can be beneficial for us even in the future.
There are many ways to make friends with diverse people, such as social
media, online games, traveling, and more. Once you’ve made friends with them,
you’ll find that friends from different groups are actually great teachers. We can
learn many things from them, such as their culture, language, and tradition among
other things. Having diverse friends will also help us to understand other people’s
views and perspectives in life and understand the struggles that they go through. In
other words, they can help develop our ability to empathize with other people.
It’s never too early to introduce diversity to someone. If people are used to
interacting with different people with different backgrounds from a young age,
they would be more comfortable when forming relationships and bonds with
different groups when they’re adults. I think that parents and schools need to teach
children and teens to accept diversity and make friends with diverse people,
especially people with different race and religion, since they are usually the most
common subject to discrimination. In addition, this can prevent bullying and
racism, which are still commonly found in some schools.
