During the revolution, it was not necessary to have full Spanish ancestry from peninsular

parents to be a criollo. They can be people of pure or largely Spanish descent who were born in
the area. For 200 years, from the 17th to the 18th centuries, the Philippine Creoles were
Filipinos in the sense that their lives were entirely dedicated to the service of the country:
expanding or solidifying national borders and protecting them. Their great effort, their triumph,
was to preserve the Philippines intact for two centuries, during which time the islands were
under constant threat of invasion from the Chinese, the Japanese, the British, and the Dutch.
The country was under perpetual siege for two centuries. Despite the Creoles' efforts, the
book's author, Nick Joaquin, questioned their motives and referred to them as "mercenaries."

I am totally against with Filipino Creoles being sneer as Mercenaries, for further knowledge
Mercenaries means a professional soldier hired to serve in a foreign army or a person primarily
concerned with material reward at the expense of ethics. During those 200 years, the Creole
only failed once, when the British invaded, but he quickly regained his equilibrium. Despite all
evidence to the contrary, the conquering Americans of the 1900s would dismiss the Spanish
empire in the Philippines as inept; for if the primary duty of a mother country to a colony is to
protect it from invasion, then we must admit that Spain, in its nearly 400 years in the islands,
performed admirably, especially when we consider that within 50 years after the American
obliteration, Spain had acquitted itself with honor. Creoles fought for our country’s protection
for centuries and just by one mistake they are being labelled as “Mercenary”.

I do believe that it isn’t mercenary to fight for one’s country because the greatest thing you can
do as a person even in your own little ways is loving your country and what more loving it to the
extent of risking your life for the sake of your country’s protection. And as stated in the book,
Creoles only failed once over their 200 years of service. So labelling them by Mercenary isn’t
right because without the Creoles there would be no Philippines at all, to emphasize a point
that is now invisible to us we would be a province of Indonesia today, and no one would be
debating over what a Filipino is. I’ve come to realize that in life people will always see what you
did wrong, no matter how much you did right.
