Assignment #1
Answer the following briefly.
1. Why is man a moral animal?
Answer: Based on Charles Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution”, humans are animals and have evolved
from ancestors that were not human. But our “bodily frame,” as well as the capacities that stem from
it, show also that we are a unique kind of animal, a unique kind of ape, with distinctive features, of
which the moral sense is one. Humans are notably different from the apes and all other animals in
anatomy, but also and no less importantly in their functional capacities and behavior, both as
individuals and socially. Most fundamental are the advanced intellectual faculties, which allow
humans to categorize.  Humans have learned how to conserve and increase their ability to have a
better life. Humans have moral values; that is, they accept standards according to which their conduct
is judged as either right or wrong, good or evil.

2. Philosophers refer to Ethics as “ the only necessary knowledge “. Explain why.

Answer: Philosophers refer to Ethics as “the only necessary knowledge “ because it is inescapable for
us not to have a sense of right and wrong, so we unwittingly make ethical judgements. Ethics is the
foundation of a civilized and just society. For us humans it may be one of the highest principles to
teach us how to behave with integrity toward others intellectually. Our trust in one another
ultimately gets down to our expectation of others understanding of right and wrong.

3. What do you expect to learn from Ethics?

Answer: I expect to learn ethical knowledge and to discover reasonable general principles that will
help me decide what I ought to do and what I ought not to do in all cases. To gain knowledge of the
general principles that I can use as guidelines in all situations, along with some thinking and some
judgment, to determine what would be right to do which will help me to be the better version of
myself.
4. Is Ethics the same as Religion? Why?
Answer: For me, ethics is different from religion. Ethics centrally and primarily deals with morality and
its principles, while religion deals with morality only as an important condition for its true worship.
The direct object of ethics is morality while that of religion is spiritual worship. Ethics is judge of
morality as it sets the criteria by which moral actions can be justified, while religion is judged by
morality in the sense that any religions which ignores moral principles and practices immorality,
automatically fails as religion. Ethics is a materialist social discipline while religion is an idealist system
of faith according to a supreme being.
5. Differentiate ethical norms and law.
Answer: The difference between ethical norms and law is that, the law refers to a systematic body of
rules that governs the whole society and the actions of its individual members while ethical norms are
based on human principles of right and wrong that guides people about the basic human conduct.
Laws is created with an intent to maintain social order and peace in the society and provide
protection to all the citizens while ethical norms are made to help people to decide what is right or
wrong and how to act.
