Visitors to London are struck by the proud splendour and glamour of one of the world's oldest
capitals, admiring iconic sites like Big Ben, the Palace of Westminster and Buckingham Palace. However,
visitors seeking a glimpse into the city's everyday life should not miss Portobello Market, which is the
most-visited market in London.
This vibrant market has been featured in a number of films, documentaries and best selling books, the
most famous being the film “Notting Hill” starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, which brought
Portobello Market to the attention of audiences all over the world.
Portobello Market is divided into different sections selling second-hand items, clothing, jewellery,
souvenirs and vegetables. The most sought-after area is devoted to antiques. Visitors may feel
overwhelmed as there are over 1,000 booths manned by antique dealers from throughout England. It's a
great fun to browse through antique cameras, watches, pottery and paintings that date back 300 years.
They are sold at different prices, so it's possible to find a few good bargains. It seems that both buyers
and sellers look forward to the weekends when they can meet and escape the city's fast pace at Portobello
Market.
When tired from exploring the market, visitors can drop into the nearby food courts to savour an
Indian curry, Italian pizza or sandwiches from Europe. It's a great pleasure to drink a cappuccino while
listening to street performers. These represent the lively fun of Portobello Market, offering exciting
experiences that keep people coming back.

Why do (16) _______ people take revenge on others? Why aren’t we able to sort out our

are experiencing a deeply rooted part of human nature. Our desire for revenge comes from the brain’s
limbic system, the most primitive part of the brain and one that we share with all animals. (18)______,
when someone confronts us, we often prefer attacking verbally or physically rather than try to work out a
solution together.
However, unlike animals, we also possess a highly evolved cerebral cortex which allows us to plan and
analyse – and this can make revenge more than just a(n) (19) ____ reaction. A person who feels they
have been wronged may even enjoy planning a creative and appropriate act of revenge. Some people

Read the following passage and mark the letter A. B. C. or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 21 to 27.
Biological diversity has become widely recognized as a critical conservation issue only in the past two
decades. The rapid destruction of the tropical rain forests, which are the ecosystems with the highest
known species diversity on Earth, has awakened people to the importance and fragility of biological
diversity. The high rate of species extinctions in these environments is jolting, but it is important to
recognize the significance of biological diversity in all ecosystems. As the human population continues to
expand, it will negatively affect one after another of Earth’s ecosystems. In terrestrial ecosystems and in
fringe marine ecosystems (such as wetlands), the most common problem is habitat destruction. In most
situations, the result is irreversible. Now humans are beginning to destroy marine ecosystems through
other types of activities, such as disposal and runoff of poisonous waste; in less than two centuries, by
significantly reducing the variety of species on Earth, they have irrevocably redirected the course of
evolution.
Certainly, there have been periods in Earth’s history when mass extinctions have occurred. The
extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by some physical event, either climatic or cosmic. There have also
been less dramatic extinctions, as when natural competition between species reached an extreme
conclusion. Only 0.01 percent of the species that have lived on Earth have survived to the present, and it
was largely chance that determined which species survived and which died out.
However, nothing has ever equaled the magnitude and speed with which the human species is altering
the physical and chemical world and demolishing the environment. In fact, there is wide agreement that
it is the rate of change humans are inflicting, even more than the changes themselves, that will lead to
biological devastation. Life on Earth has continually been in flux as slow physical and chemical changes
have occurred on Earth, but life needs time to adapt-time for migration and genetic adaptation within
existing species and time for the proliferation of new genetic material and new species that may be able to
survive in new environments.
Question 21: What does the passage mainly discuss?

B. The cause of the dinosaurs' extinction is unknown.
C. Not all mass extinctions have been caused by human activity.
D. Earth's climate has changed significantly since the dinosaurs' extinction.
Question 25: The word "magnitude" in paragraph 3 mostly means .
