PREFACE

The magnitude of English mastery urgency has made the author

of this book formulating guidelines provided for students. It aims making

learners to comprehend and apply what they have gotten in English class

into their lives.

Consequently, the book is composed to provide enlightenment for

early age English teachers on how English should be taught and how to

understand the children’s development process. These are efforts to

optimize the teaching learning process. This book can be utilized by

teachers who will teach English for elementary school students; parents

who will start teaching English to their children; and parties who will open

non-formal education institution.

The author is aware that this handbook is still far from

perfection and has weakness in some aspects. Therefore, criticism and

suggestion are welcomed for the improvement of this work. This

worksheet, hopefully, would give significant benefit among teachers,

students, as well as people in general who read it.

7 WONDERS OF THE WORLD

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is one of Seven Wonders of the World.

The wall extends for about 8.851 kilometers over the deserts, mountains

and grasslands. It is recorded that the wall traverses 9 provinces and

cities in China. This famous Great Wall was built during three dynasty

periods, from Qin Dynasty, Han Dynasty, to Ming Dynasty. It took more

than 2000 years to finish the Great Wall. The purpose of building this

very long wall was to be a stronghold from enemies in the northern area.

Nowadays, The Great Wall of China becomes very popular. Many tourists

come to see and to have a long walk along the wall. Moreover, some tour

operators arrange night tours when the Great Wall is illuminated with

lines of lights. It is a great time to see a unique and exotic magical view

of The Great Wall of China.


Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a famous symbol of the Incan Empire history. It

is also well known as the lost Incan city. It was built in 1450 but a hundred

years later it was abandoned after the Spanish came and conquered the

Incan Empire. Machu Picchu is a city built with the polished stone. It is

located in the middle of a tropical mountain forest with an

extraordinarily beautiful panorama. The main building is Intihuatana, the

Temple of the Sun, and Room of the Three Windows, which are called

the Sacred District. Initially, the city was a fortress and then

transformed into the capital of the Incas. Machu Picchu means Old

Mountain. The city stands about 3 thousands meters above sea-level,

among the high mountains. Though it takes long time to reach the place,

the dazzling panorama is very worth it.


Colosseum

Colosseum is one of Seven Wonders of the World which is located

in Italy. This place is a large amphitheatre in the city of Rome. It is a

historical relic. This place was built in the period of King Alfero Gilberto

year 72 AD. But it wasn’t finished. Then his son, Titus, completed this

building in the year 80 AD. This building is elliptical or spherical shape

which can accommodate 50,000 spectators. Colosseum is recognized as

an astonishing work with great and spectacular architecture.

Unfortunately, this magnificent amphitheater was used for gladiator

battles, animal battles and capital punishment. The Colosseum is

considered as one of the greatest examples of Roman building with its

unique design and elliptical structure. Tourists and first-time visitors to

Rome never fail to be amazed after seeing Colosseum. Therefore, it is

acknowledged as Rome’s most famous monument which becomes the

symbol of the city.


Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is one icon from India which is very famous for its

beautiful architecture and history. It is spesifically located in Agra. This

building was established during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

It took around 22 years to build Taj Mahal. It was dedicated as a

mausoleum (grave) to his wife, the Empress Arjumand Banu Begum known

as Mumtaz Mahal. Although the Emperor had had two other wives, but

the Empress Mumtaz Mahal was the one he loved very much. After the

birth of their daughter, the Empress passed away. Then Mughal Emperor

ordered his ministers to design the Taj Mahal as a symbol of his love to

the Empress. The building looks so majestic with white marble from the

front. Taj Mahal consists of the main gate, the garden, a mosque, a living

room, and some white and beautiful buildings. Especially at sunrise and

sunset, this building looks so wonderful.


Great Pyramid of Giza

The great pyramid of Giza is the name given to the oldest and

largest of all pyramids located in Giza, the third-largest city in Egypt.

This pyramid also known as the Pyramid of Khufu as it was built for the

fourth dynasty Pharaoh of Egypt, Khufu. This historical building of Egypt

is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and remain in the list

until now.

With its base size (230.4 metres) and its height (146.5 metres)

this pyramidal construction considered to be the tallest building in the

world for more than 3.800 years. It was estimated by the scientist that

it took 20 years to build the pyramid. The whole building was formed by

using 2.300.000 stone blocks which arranged into 210 layers from the

bottom to the top. Each stone blocks has average size of 1 to 1.5m with

the weight of 6.5 to 10 tons for each large stone.

Egyptologists believe that the function of the pyramid is to be

used as a tomb for the Pharaoh. There are two entrance that we can use
to enter the pyramid. Both of them is located on the east side of the

pyramid. Once we entered the building, we will find three chambers

inside the great pyramid. The lowest chamber is called the subterranean

chamber, the highest chamber is the King’s chamber, and the the one in

the middle is the Queen’s chamber. You will also find a passage called the

grand gallery connecting the Queen’s chamber and the King’s chamber.

Borobudur temple

Borobudur temple is a temple which became a pride of Indonesian

people because it is ever been included into the 7 wonders of the world.

It also becomes the largest Buddhist temple in the world. This temple is

located in Borobudur Village, Magelang, Central of Java, Indonesia. It is

approximately 100 km from Semarang, 86 km from Surakarta, and 40 km

from Jogjakarta. It was found as a place of worship for the Mahayana


Buddhist by Sailendra dynasty in 800 AD. It was first discovered by Sir

Thomas Stanford Raffles in 1814. At that time, it was found crushed and

buried in the ground.

Originally, it has 10 levels which have overall height about 42

meters. However, after the reparation, the height of Borobudur become

approximately 34.5 meters with overall building area about 15,129 m2.

The front side of Borobudur temple is facing eastwards, although each

side of the temple has similar form. There are 3 main levels of the realm

in Borobudur. The third level is Kamadhatu (the realm of lust), Rupadhatu

(tangible realm), and Arupadhatu (formless realm).

There are so many reliefs on Borobudur’s wall which total is about

1,460 panels. These reliefs tell about ancient stories written In Sanskrit

language and read by Mapradakisana way. Mapradakisana is a way to read

in accordance with the clockwise direction. The way to read the story is

starting from the east side of the gate at every level of the temple.

There are so many stories written on Borobudur’s wall. The first story

on this relief is Karmawibhangga which written on the foot of this

temple. It tells about karma. Karma is the law of cause and effect

obtained by humans. This relief depicts human actions both

reprehensible and commendable along with what will they have. The next

relief is Laitawistara. These reliefs lined in the stairs on the south side

of temple. The numbers of this relief are 120 figures which illustrate

the story of the Buddha from birth to become a Buddhist. And then last
are Jataka and Awadana relief. This relief tells the story about Buddha

before he was born.

Besides decorated with reliefs, Borobudur also has so many

sculptures which become a symbol of the Buddha embodiment. The

statues are sitting cross-legged in the lotus position and show a certain

hand gesture. These are located at Rupadhatu level. There are 432

sculptures there which are lined sequentially in every niche of this level.

In the first row, there are 104 niches, in the second row there are 104

niches, in third row 88 niches, in the fourth row 72 niches, and fifth

rows 64 niches. Beside sculpture, Borobudur temple also has Stupa.

There are 72 Stupas at the level of Aruphadatu. Those stupas are spread

in the court at this stage. In the first court, there are 32 stupas, in the

second court 24 stupas, and 16 stupas on the third court.

Since the discovery of Borobudur temple, there are so many

Buddhist statues theft. Originally, the amount of Buddha statues is 504

statues. More than 300 statues have been damaged. Most of the statues

of Buddha are headless because often being stolen to be used in a

museum collection.

A Passenger : Three, but one of them is a backpack. So, I’ll take

it to the cabin with me.

An Officer : Okay, I’ll check the weight of 2 of your suitcase,

Sir. Pelase wait for a moment.

A Passenger : Okay.

An Officer : I am sorry but your luggage’s weight exceeds the

standard weight allowed. If you insist put it in, you’ll

be charged an extra amount.

A Passenger : I see. How much extra do I have to pay?

An Officer : You will have to pay an extra 100.000 rupiah, Sir.

A Passenger : It is not a problem. Can I pay in debit card?


An Officer : I am sorry, Sir. We only accept cash for the luggage

charge.

A Passenger : That’s fine. Here you go.
