Lesson 6

Rizal in Sunny Spain

Overview:
Spain, a country on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, includes 17 autonomous regions with diverse
geography and cultures. Capital city Madrid is home to the Royal Palace and Prado museum,
housing works by European masters. In this Module you will know how Rizal spend his time in the
Spain and this module will guide you on understanding Rizal’s life in Spain.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1.) Describe Rizal experience during his travel in Spain.
2.) Assess Rizal’s aims and reason for studying abroad.
3.) Compare Rizal’s Education from UST and ATENO to Spain.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND SELF-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

As, mentioned. Rizal stopped attending classes at


UST in 1882, for he was sick and tired of the
discriminatory and oppressive Dominican
professors. Rizal decided to leave the country not
just to complete his medical studies in Europe. He
was hidden purpose of voyage.

Purposes of his voyage;

1.) To make a name himself in the realm of journalism


2.) To observe and study European society
3.) And to prepare himself for the task of liberating the Filipino from Spanish tyranny.

SECRET DEPARTURE
May 1, 1882- Rizal left Calamba and was able to reach Manila after Ten hours of journey
via “CARROMATA”. Carromata is a light 2-wheeled boxlike passenger vehicle usually
drawn by a single native pony. (Upper right)
No one among the family members of Rizal knew his departure for Spain, except
Paciano, Saturnina, Tio Antonio and few friends.
His brother Paciano did everything to ensure that Rizal can leave the country secretly.
He secured Rizal a passport with the name Jose Mercado.
Rizal stayed in Manila for 2 days before his trip to Spain.
Before leaving, he heard the mass at Santo Domingo Chruch in the Walled City and then
proceed to Pasig to board the cruiser Salvadora to Singapore.

ITENERARY TO SPAIN
On his way to Madrid Spain. He felt really sad
Leaving his country and family. To entertain he-
rse rself, Rizal made some sketches of his fellow pass-
e engers and things he saw along the way.
He first disembarked and visited the town of
Singapore. On board the steamship “Djemnah”
(Left) and he stayed for 2 days. He took some
time to visit garden, parks and historical spots.

On June 11, 1882 the ship reaches at Naples, Italy


(Right). Jose Rizal impressed to the city for its
panoramic beauty and lively people around the
city. On June 12, 1882 the ship sailed to France.

It docks at the harbor of Marseilles (Left).


Rizal was impressed by the courtesy of the
custom police. He was likewise, enchanted
by its graceful and impressive buildings and
the courtesy and refined manners of the
French men.

Rizal took the train going to Barcelona (Right).


He like the Barcelona the prevalence of
freedom and liberalism in this city and the
good qualities demonstrated by its residents
open heartedness, hospitality and courage.
Rizal was welcomed by the Filipinos in
Barcelona, most of who were his former
classmates at Ateneo Municipal.

Rizal did not forget his mission that making a name for himself in the field of Journalism. Paciano
believed that Rizal would be able to express his nationalistic and patriotic sentiment which in effect can
arouse the hostility and suspicion of the Spanish regime. Rizal will be transformed intro a patriot, a
novelist and a nationalist.

While in Barcelona, Rizal wrote a nationalistic essay titled “ELA AMOR PATRIO” in English “Love
of the Country”, his first article written in Spain. (Down)

Rizal wrote this essay when he was


still 21 years old under the
nickname of “LaongLaan”. It came
out on August 20,1882 in the
Diariong Tagalog in Manila, for the
first time he used the term foreign
land in referring to Spain. Diariong
Tagalog was the First Philippine
Bilingual Newspaper. (Down)

Rizal Moved in Madrid, Spain

After some months, Rizal left in Barcelona for


Madrid. On September 16,1882. Rizal met and
befriended Consuelo Ortiga Y Rey (Left), the
prettiest of the daughters of Don Pablo, the
Spanish liberal and mayor of Manila. Consuelo
suggested in her diary entry that on the first
day she met Rizal, they talked the whole night
and Rizal said many beautiful things about
her.

Rizal enrolled in Medicine and Philosopy and


Letters at the Universidad Central De Madrid on
November 3.

On November 1884, Rizal was involved in the


chaotic student demonstrations by the
Central University students in which many
were wounded, hit by cane, arrested, and
imprisoned. The protest started after Dr.
Miguel Morayta (Left) had benn
excommunicated by bishops for delivering

a liberal speech, proclaiming the freedom of science and the teacher at the opening
ceremony of the academic year.

On June 1884, Rizal received the degree of Licentiate


in Medicine at the age of 23. His rating though was
just “Fair” for it was affected by the “low-grades” he
got from UST. In the next school year 1885 he took
and completed 3 additional subjects leading to the
Doctor of Medicine. He was not awarded the
Doctor’s Diploma though for failing to pay the fee
and the required Thesis.

Exactly on his 24th Birthday, the school awarded him the degree of
Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters with the grade of “Excellent”

Despite of Rizal’s schedule, he found time to


associate with Pedro Paterno, Graciano Lopez
Jaena, Gregorio Sanciano, Juan Luna, Felix
Hidalgo, Marcelo H. Del Pilar and others.

Rizal, Jaena, and Del Pilar were closely associated and the trio called the
Triumvirate of the Propaganda Movement (Upper Left).

Juan Luna and Felix Hidalgo emerged


winners in the 1884 Madrid Exposition.
Luna was awarded a gold medal for his
painting Spolarium (Right). A banquet
was tendered in honor of these two
Filipino artists at Café Ingels on June
25,1884 with Rizal delivering a speech he
called Brindis or in English “Toast”.

Basically, Spoliarium is emphasized the violation of human rights towards the


colonizers of Spain and Juan Luna expressed his patriotism through it. Moreover,
he created such a harmonious relationship between different colors such as
between the red color in the center with the shade of green in the dark sides.
