INTRODUCTION
Living systems demonstrate a unique and complex hierarchical organization. You find a
hierarchical level that includes simple molecules, macromolecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ system,
organisms, population and species. Each level builds on the level below it and has its own internal structure,
which is often hierarchical. These hierarchical levels are in ascending order. You are the best example of a
living thing. Your body is composed of many parts. Each part has its own function. You use your eyes to see
what is around you. You have ears to collect sound waves. You have your feet for walking. All the parts of
living things are interrelated. They do not work alone but as a whole. One part interacts with another part.
Have you ever asked yourself “ what is inside these body parts that enable them to carry out their function?
In this module, we shall discuss the organization of organisms that enables them to survive despite
the ever changing environment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module, you are expected to do the followings:
1. Describe the different levels of biological organization from cell to biosphere.
2. Illustrate the coordinated function of cell, tissues and organ systems for maintaining life of
plants , animals and human beings.
3. Recognize the necessity of an organized system for proper growth, development and
survival of an organism.

TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE: 1 Week

EXPLORE
On your friends, name which are in the following groups:
1. Height
2. Complexion
3. Hair color

FIRM- UP
The Molecular Organization

1. Atom
The smallest unit of matter that possesses physical and chemical
properties

2. Molecule
Consist of two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together.

Macromolecule- Very large molecule

3. Organelles
It is highly organized assembly of several micro- molecules
bonded together to perform specific function in the cell.

4. Cell
It is a collection of organelles that are functioning together. It is the basic unit
of life capable of carrying out the functions of living things.

Two Types of Cell

a. Prokaryote- was a heterotroph ( can’t make its own food )
- no nucleus
- has 2 groups ( archaebacteria and eubacteria )
b. Eukaryotic
- plant or animal cell ( on the next lesson we will tackle this
two type of eukaryotic cell )

5. Tissue
It is a group of distinct and similar cells that work together to perform
a specific set of functions.

6. Organ
It is a group of tissues organized together to perform a certain
function.

7. Organ System
It consists of several different organs that work together to perform a
broad spectrum of function

8. Organism
It is an aggregation or collection of the organ systems that work
together to bring about various life activities

9. Population
It is a group of organisms of the same species occupying a given
area. These organisms are freely interacting with one another.

10. Community
It consists of all the populations of different species of
organisms living together in a given area. Their interaction may be
harmful, symbiotic or cooperative.

11. Ecosystem
It consists of all the community of organisms ( biotic
components ) that inhabit the same area, as well as the non-living
( abiotic ) components of the area and the sets of interactions that
exist between these two components.

12. Biome
It pertains to a collection of ecosystems with similar climates
and covering a large geographical area.

13. Biosphere
It consists of the totality of the ecosystems of planet Earth. It
also pertains to any part of Earth’s sphere where life exists.
