A Summary of Baylan
There are always two sides to a coin. “Baylan” is a Bisayan term for “medical man” or
quack doctors. Baylan was written in the year 2005 by Macario Tiu. This story featured two
characters named Lando and Datu Pikong. These two characters oppose each other. Lando is a
man of science, he believes in the facts than beliefs, while Datu Pikong is a cultured man, he
believes in superstition rather than facts.
This story began when Lando was passing by an abandoned chapel but noticed there were
many people. He saw his friend Berto and asked what was happening. Berto said there was a
medical mission held by Datu Pikong. Lando could not believe it, for all he knew Datu Pikong

another place because they would start the chapel’s renovation.

He arrived home to his wife Luisa and Ms. Minda, the masseuse, they told Lando they
went to the doctor for a checkup. Luisa refused to go for an ultrasound because she wanted to

He talked about what happened in the chapel and asked questions to Ms. Minda about more
information about “Baylan.” He then vented his grudge to the two, but his wife warned him to
just leave him alone because it is their belief and we should respect it.

Moving forward to one Sunday, Lando and his men started renovating the church. Lando

another place. Datu Pikong moved without any complaints. Lando was checking out an area with

One night Lando was woken up by his wife because she was about to give birth. It was
raining heavily, but that didn’t stop Lando to get Ms. Minda and help with the equipment
required to assist the delivery. After hours of pushing, Luisa still wasn’t able to push out the
baby, and Ms. Minda was worried and confused because the baby was not that big and she
should be able to deliver smoothly. Out of desperation of the two, Ms. Minda called Datu Pikong
for help. As Datu Pikong analyzed the situation, he received some calls from his cellphone and
informed the two that Lando did something that angered the “abyan” and as punishment, they
will get the life of his wife and child. Lando was willing to do anything at that point to save his
family. Datu Pikong told Lando that the “abyan” requested him to offer a hog and a white
chicken as offerings, to something he usually doesn’t wear which was his barong tagalog, and
lastly to dance outside like a hawk to pay for what he did. He was eventually possessed by one

of the “abyans” and that saved his wife and his child.

In conclusion, Lando learned his lesson and joined Datu Pikong dancing like a hawk out
of relief and gratitude. Therefore, I believe the writer wanted to relay that we as Filipinos
although our generation are all about facts let us still remember that culture is part of our identity.
We should act least acknowledge and respect that some people believe in superstitions.
