This Whale can be carved as a relief or in 3d. She can be

carved at any scale you would like.

Carve the whale so that the chin, and the two fins touch a
table top and don’t wobble.

Wood:
Basswood or Tupelo is recommended for this carving, but a
figured wood oiled to a natural finish would look great.

Tools: Depending on the scale you choose, this whale is

best carved with a General Carver for fast removal of wood
and smaller knife such as a a Draper Detailer for the eyes,
mouth and in the tail area.

Options:
You may sand her smooth and paint her or leave unpainted with tool marks for a more rustic look.

Eyes: You can carve them and paint gloss polyurethane on them or you can mix india ink with 5
minute epoxy and drop them on a piece of waxpaper to make eyes. Make a lot of eyes so that you
can match them for the correct size.

A water plume made of wire glued into a hole drilled into the top could hold cards and or pictures.
If you choose the plume, I would suggest a base to stabilize the whale.

If you are not the wire blacksmith that I am, I am told that the plumes are available at most craft
stores.
