DRESSMAKING 2

11/12
LEARNING MODULE
GRADE LEVEL: 11/12
Technical and entrepreneurial skills are in demand nowadays. That is why most schools
train students to become more competitive by developing entrepreneurial skills and
competencies that will help you earn a living for your future. Dressmaking or garment
construction is one of the areas where students like you can engage in to become one future
entrepreneur. It is the main target of the K to 12 Program on the Department of Education.

For this week, this module provides the learners with the basic concepts and principles
of planning the design of a lady’s skirt. This will make them realize the start of their
dressmaking career. Also, this module will serve as the foundation for our learners' dressmaking
knowledge, attitude, and skills, which they will develop further as they finish high school.
Surely, it is a complete learning package that will give our young learners to build the
competencies they need to develop in the K to 12 Technology and Livelihood Education
Program.

Prepare and Cut Materials for
Ladies Skirt

TVL 11/12 – DRESSMAKING II

Quarter 1-Week 3
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. Prepare materials for ladies skirt

2. Lay-out and mark patterns for ladies skirt
3. Cut materials for ladies skirt

PREPARE MATERIALS FOR LADIES’ SKIRT

In preparation before the sewing process, here are the tools and materials you
must prepare first:
 Cut drafted pattern
 Tailor’s chalk/dressmakers pencil
 Tape measure
 Shears/Cutting scissors
 Pins
 1-inch size garter/elastic (1 Yard)
 Sewing machine or sewing box complete with sewing tools.
 1 ½ yard fabric – SPANDEX or any available fabric you will find at home as
long as it is stretchable.

The discussions below are additional information that you need to understand to treat
fabric before sewing

There are different ways of treating and rinsing the fabric to achieve the desired
fit garment. The following are preparation techniques you need to follow before cutting
and sewing the fabric:
1. Singeing- this process is done by burning off the end fibers of the fabric by using
a gas flame or any heated plates that can burn the fibers at the end part of the
fabric.

Quarter 1-Week 3
2. Desizing- is the process made on the fabric to remove the wrapped yarn or the
lightweight blend of cotton which is in the end part of the fabric to soften its
edge.
3. Scouring – is the process of removing the oils, fats, and other impurities onto the
fabric. Using abrasive or letting the strong flow of water towards fabric dirt or
impurities or by placing the fabric in a temperature room as part of the scouring
process.
4. Bleaching- - it is the process made by which chemicals or bleaching agent is
applied to the fabric to lighten the color or remove some impurities and stain.
Sometimes this process is done to change the color of the fabric.
5. Mercerizing-it is a finishing treatment applied to the fabric which is the opposite
of the bleaching process. This fabric treatment is done to highlight and improve
the color used in the dyeing process, and such a process will improve its color
and reduces the shrinking of the fabric after wetting it.

The following are steps you need to observe in preparing the fabric:
1. Straighten the grain. Fabrics specifically of not so good or special quality have
wrinkles or folds either lengthwise or crosswise. You need to remove those
wrinkles to straighten the fabric and bring back its necessary position. It is done
by wetting the fabric and place it on the dryer and hang it flatly. In this manner,
the fabric will be of good shape when sewn.
2. Serge the cut edges of the fabric. It is the process of overcasting the unfinished
seam of the fabric by using a serging machine. If a serging machine is not
available an embroidery machine can be used just to functionally make a design
on seam and edges.
3. Pre-wash the fabric- It is part of the general rule of a dressmaker. Prewashing
the fabric is usually made to avoid shrinking. It may either be done thru hand
washing or machine wash.
4. Iron out the fabric- It is very important to layout patterns in a flat and wrinkle-free
fabric. So, you need to iron the fabric and set the temperature based on the type
of fabric to avoid burning it especially the delicate and thin fabrics.
Note: If you use SPANDEX fabric, you don't need these ways of treatment.

Laying-out and Pinning Pattern

Pattern layout is the arrangement of drafted pattern unto the fabric meant for
marking before cutting the final pattern. These two steps are also considered crucial as
accuracy is must observed.

TVL 11/12 – DRESSMAKING II

Quarter 1-Week 3
The pattern is a hard paper that is composed of the different specifications of the
individual body parts. It is usually equal to different parts of the garment made flat on a
paper.
Types of Pattern:

1. Basic block or block pattern. It is an individual component of the garment without

reflecting any design. It is produced according to the exact body measurement
for different age groups and gender. It is classified into :

 Flat method
 Modeling method
2. Working Pattern or Garment Pattern. It is made up of basic and block patterns. It
is needed for every part of the garment.
Laying out pattern pieces on the fabric to prepare for cutting is an important step
that must be done carefully and accurately to save time, money, and effort. To get the
best result, here are some guidelines to follow in laying out and pinning patterns.
Procedures in laying-out and pinning pattern.

1. Make sure that you have all the pattern pieces – front part and back part of the
pajama pattern.
2. Distinguished the right side or a “pretty” side of the fabric.
3. Face the fabric right side under to free it from marks.
4. Spread the fabric flat on the table and pin the pattern pieces and fabric together.
5. Notice and consider the fabric grain.
CUTTING OF MATERIALS

Properly cutting your fabric is the very first challenge you face when sewing a
garment that wears well. Marking the fabric after cutting is a clear guide for you to
make sewing flow smoothly. Preparing the cut parts will make you organize so that
sewing will be easier.

To avoid wastage on fabric, make sure that you have completed the processes
required before sewing.
Listed below are the tips before cutting the fabric:

 Check every detail of the pattern.

 Make sure that the allowances are there.
 All lines should be connected appropriately.
If there are no mistakes, then you can now cut the pattern properly.
