ACTIVITY M2.7: THE GLOBAL MIGRATION

(410 words)

Global migration as defined by the Cambridge dictionary, is a situation in which

people go to live in foreign countries, especially in order to find work. In the Philippines,

m

migrating abroad has been a pervasive culture to us Filipinos which made it common

and even desirable for almost all Filipino workers. With the desire to live a better life,

these people are willing to risk everything including leaving their lives that they grew up

in. But regardless of these desires, what could possibly be the concrete factors that
o

persuade these Filipinos to work abroad.

In the year 2018, there were 2.3 million Overseas Filipino Workers across the

world according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. These workers are most likely

migrating to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong. But what are the

factors that urge these workers to leave their lives in their own country behind? First is

because of our country’s high unemployment rate. With the increasing rate for

unemployment, workers especially fresh graduates are having a hard time to find a job;

structure around the globe that is why most people are having a hard time to make ends

meet. With that being said, Filipino workers are tempted to migrate although there is no

certainty as to what kind of life will they experience when living abroad. And lastly, job

insecurity due to contractual status. We often hear the Filipino phrase, “Magpapaalila ka

na rin lang, eh doon na sa kumikita ng dolyar”, this goes to show that contractual

employees earning minimum wage are willing to jeopardize their status just for the sake

of a higher and a more stable pay in another country.

Global migration has been an ongoing economic trend for us Filipinos. It may

seem acceptable to desire for a better life for your family, but we must always keep in

mind that we were born Filipino to serve for the Philippines. It will never be a shame to

aim higher but also never forget where you came from because as long as this cycle of

professionals migrating continue, the status of our country will also remain stagnant.
