Timing belt: removal/installation


Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:
Always fit a new timing belt after removal
Coolant pump renewal is recommended after timing belt removal
Recommendation: When renewing the timing belt, renew the tensioners and pulleys
Caution! If a coolant pump is fitted with seals/sealing rings, do not apply liquid sealant
Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation
Check the belt(s) for cracks, fraying, wear and oil contamination
Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment
Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction
General
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Raise the vehicle
Remove the right-hand front wheel
Remove the ancillary drive belt cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts
Remove the ancillary drive belt
Drive belt layout

Remove the alternator


Remove the starter motor
Remove the coolant expansion tank and place it aside

Note: Do not disconnect the fluid lines


Use a trolley jack to support the engine
Note: Use a wooden block to support the engine
Remove the engine mount

Remove the coolant pump pulley


Remove the timing belt cover
Turn the crankshaft clockwise to align the timing marks

Remove the access plug


Use a special tool to lock the crankshaft (303-748)

Slowly turn the crankshaft clockwise


Lock the flywheel (303-393, 303-393-01, 303-393A)

Remove the crankshaft pulley


Remove the timing belt lower cover
Remove the engine mounting bracket

Use the special tools to lock the camshafts (303-1097)

Turn the tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until the locking tool fits (303-1054)

Remove the timing belt


Installation
Fit the timing belt anti-clockwise, starting at the crankshaft gearwheel
Remove the tensioner locking tool
Refit the timing belt lower cover
Refit the crankshaft pulley
Remove the crankshaft locking tool
Remove the flywheel locking tool
Remove the camshaft locking tool
Turn the crankshaft clockwise (360° + 270°)
Fit the crankshaft locking tool (303-748)

Slowly turn the crankshaft clockwise


The timing is set when the special tools fit correctly (303-1097)

Further refitting is in the reverse order of removal


Torque settings
Engine mounting bracket (55 Nm)

Engine mount: (A: 80 Nm, B: 10 Nm, C: 48 Nm)

Timing belt lower cover: (9 Nm)


Timing belt upper cover: (9 Nm)
