Answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences.

A. Morning in Nagrebcan

1. Describe Tang Ciako. How did he treat his wife? His children?

According to the story, Tang Ciako is a very strict father. When he come home at late
night, he is always drunk. He beats his wife and children. A man who is always short tempered
because of his uncomfortable experience in life. And, he is blaming his family for having a hard
life. One time, he threatens his family to kill his children. He is also accusing his wife as a
prostitute.

2. Characterize Baldo and Ambo; Baldo’s treatment of the puppies. Is their quarrel serious or
childish? Describe them before, during, and after their quarrel.

Baldo is a ten year old boy. Ambo is a seven year old boy, and Ambo is Baldo’s younger
brother. Baldo often calls his younger brother “son of an Igorot.” Baldo is a concerned fellow
while Ambo is a foolish child who is not following what is right. The quarrel between the two
brothers is just a childish thing. It is because Baldo does not want Ambo to touch the black-
spotted puppy. After the quarrel about the puppy, they fight each other until they punch one
another. And then, their father noticed it and scolded them. After they have been beaten, their
father left them, then the two of them became friends again. Together, they search for the
puppy. They saw the corpse of the puppy and burried it.

3. Identify the conflict in the story.

The conflict is when the brothers fought each other because of the quarrel, they’re
father struck Baldo with the piece of wood in his hand and again told him to get up. But Baldo
was crying so hard. Tang Ciako took hold of one of the boy’s arms and jerked him to his feet.
Then Tang Ciako began to beat him.
4. Identify the theme of the story.

The theme of the story shows how parents treat their children. It was shown in the story
that some fathers in the world are the same as Tang Ciako. A bad example of a parent. It was
also shown how people people abuse animals. In the story, Tang Ciako hit the black-spotted
puppy multiple times until the puppy died. But the most important thing in the story is that
don’t discipline your children in a bad way.

B. The Legend of Magat River

1. Describe the stereotyped character of a man that is shown in the legend.

Magat is a tall and handsome man. He was young and strong, his eyes were keen, and
his hands sure and steady. Magat is the best hunter in their village, he is a man who has gentle
and kind character and that’s the reason why he is amazing in the village.

2. Explain the theme and conflict.

The theme of the story is like the saying “Promises are meant to be broken.” The conflict
is when Magat went to see his wife even though he promised not to went there, but he broke
his promise and broke into his wife's seclusion. There, he saw a great crocodile, he searched for
a weapon and kill the crocodile. But unfortunately it was his wife. He thought it was a crocodile
and then his wife died.

3. Write a reflection/realization after reading the story.

After reading the story I realized that don’t lie and don’t make promises you know you
can’t keep. Many of us are making promises to people that we know or even to our loved ones,
as a result promises are frequently made at the drop of hat with no real intentions of keeping it.
Because once a promise has been broke trust will also occur, because of that your relationship
or reputation towards each other will also be broken.

C. Cordillera Tale: The Giantess and the Three Children

1. What stereotyped character of orphans is shown in this tale?

They are the type of children that will do anything to survive in a middle of hardships
experiencing in the forest and clever enough to think some strategies to survive. But the
children were thin and hungry because they manage to trap a wild animal in their front yard
from time to time but other animals ate it because they had no fire to roast it.

2. What could the fictional giant in the story represent?

3. What Filipino values are shown in the story?

I think the Filipino values that I may apply in the story are that you need to be helpful,
help others when they need help and don’t expect something in return. Always respect
someone’s property/possession, always ask consent to the owner if you need something and
don’t harm other people just for your own good.

D. Discuss the meaning of the following proverbs. Choose only two.

1. Masarap nang ulam ang tuyo, kay sa lumilipad-lipad pa lang na pugo.

- Its better to have dried fish for a meal, than a quail that’s still flying.

2. Bago ka mamintas, magsalamin ka muna sa bilao.

-Before you make fun of someone’s face, try using a woven rice bowl as a mirror.

Before you judge someone’s character/status in life, you must see first yourself and
think of who you are before judging them. Because sometimes we always judge other people of
how they look and how they live their life, in fact we have no idea the story behind it or those
obstacles/challenges that they conquer in life. Just always focus on yourself not on other
people’s flaws and imperfections because each one of us has a different flaws, imperfection and
insecurity in life. Contentment is one of the solution that I may suggest for that and improving
yourself to become a better version of it.

3. Ang taong walang pangarap sa buhay, magpapalimos ng tinapay.

-A man without an ambition, will end up begging for food.

If you have not seeing the future having a comfortable life then you will end up begging
for food in the streets. You must have a goal in life able to achieve in the future, so that when
you already achieve it you will say to yourself that all the sacrifices that you made and also your
family made are all worth it. That’s why the word DREAM exists; since we are a child our
parents asked us “what is your dream?” “what do you want to be in the future?” That question
that needs an answer is the root of our dream, of our goals and of want we want to be and also
to have in the near future.
