Worked examples:

1. The table shows Diana’s shopping bill. Some of information was not included.

Calculate the values of W, X, Y and Z.

2. A shopkeeper buys the fruit at the prices shown in the table below.

He sells all of these oranges, apples and melons at the prices shown in the table:

(a) Sabbah buys 5 kg of apples and 3 melons. What is the total cost of 5 kg of apples and 3
melons?

(b) (i) After selling all the fruit, what shopkeeper’s selling price?

(ii) Calculate his TOTAL profit.

(iii) Express his profit as a percentage of the cost price.


3. A television set can be bought for $18,000 cash, or bought on a hire purchase; a deposit of 20%
and 18 monthly installments of $900.

Calculate:

(a) the hire purchase price

(b) the difference between the hire purchase and the cash price

(c) the difference as a percentage of the cash.

4. The hire purchase price for a refrigerator is $65,000 cash. A deposit of $15,000 is made and the
remainder is paid in equal monthly installment of $2,500.

Calculate:

(a) the total installment paid.

(c) how many months a customer would need to pay the total installments.

5. A man borrowed $75,000 from a bank. The bank’s interest is 12.3% per annum.

Calculate:

(a) the interest on the loan at the end of the first year

(b) the total amount owing at the end of the first year.

A repayment of $32,000 was made at the start of the second year. Calculate:

(c) the amount still outstanding at the start of the second year.

(d) the interest on the outstanding amount at the end of the second year

6. A flat is bought for $ 90,000 USD. In each of the 3 years that follows, its value appreciates by
8 %. How much is the flat worth after 3 years?

7. The table below gives information on the values and the rates of depreciation in value of two
motor vehicles.

8. On a certain day, the foreign exchange rate was given as follows:

GUY $ 1.00 = US $ 0.01


EC $ 1.00 = US $ 0.45.

Calculate the value of

(a) GUY $ 100 000 in US $

(b) US $ 500 in EC $

9. A business pays its employees a basic rate of $10.15 per hour for a 40-hour week.

(a) Calculate the basic weekly wage for ONE employee.

(b) For overtime an employee is paid a time and half the basic rate. Determine the overtime
wage if an employee who worked 8 hours overtime in a certain week.

(c) Calculate the week’s gross pay.

The employee pays 15 % tax on the weekly wage.

Calculate:

(d) the tax paid

(e) the net pay.
