Mia’s Apron

Sewing tutorial
This is a free pattern for private use and may not be used commercially
Cutting the fabric
I used roughly 2,5 metres of fabric (1,5 metres wide), but you may need more than
this depending on size/length of the skirt.
All measurements are in centimetres, with 1,5 cm seam allowance included. The
measurements are based on my body so you may have to modify some. For
reference I’m 165 cm tall with a 80 cm waist and 96 cm bust.

1. Skirt- cut 1.
Cut half a circle*, either by your own method or like this:
Start by measuring your waist. Double that, but subtract 20 cm. Then divide it by
3,14. What you get now is the diameter of your inner half-circle. Then measure
how long you want the skirt to be and draw the bottom line that far away from
your inner circle. Don’t forget to add seam allowance!
For example: My waist is 80 cm. Double that is 160. Minus 20 is 140.
140/3.14 is roughly 44,5. This is the diameter of my inner circle.
Then I added 90 cm more for the outer circle + seam allowance

44,5 cm 91,5 cm

*I made my original apron slightly bigger than half a circle because there was fabric left, but half a circle will
work just as well. You may spot that difference in the pictures of the beige one though so I thought I’d just
point that out to avoid confusion.

2. Waist band- cut 2
Measure a straight line 4 4
that is the length of your 3
waist+70 extra cm long,
and 9 cm wide.

3. Front piece- cut 1.
Draw two parallell lines 22 cm apart. This is the height of your front. Then meassure 27
centimeters in the top, and 31 at the bottom to make a rectangle with slightly angled sides.
Note: These measurements are for my size (80 cm waist and 96 cm bust) so you may have to
adjust the length a few centimetres to fit your body.

4. Pockets- cut 2 of each

Cut two squares that are 20 x 21 cm, and two that are 26 x 28 cm.

5. Shoulder straps- cut 4

Measure a straight rectangle that is 7,5 cm wide and 73 cm long (or
longer, depending on your body size. Any excess can simply be cut away
later). If you want to you can make it slightly wider on one side at the
very bottom (12 cm). This is purely aesthetic though and straight straps
will work just as well and will probably be easier for beginners.
Sewing instructions
1. Begin by hemming the skirt. Both the lower edge and the two sides.

2. Hem the upper edge of your front piece, and the upper edges of your pockets
3. Run a gathering stitch along the bottom edge of the front piece.

4. Place the side of your front piece between two of your shoulder straps. Stitch in place
and continue stitching the whole length of the shoulder strap. Repeat on the other side.

5. Turn the shoulder straps out, press the seam and then top stitch.
6. Tuck the outer edges of the shoulder straps in towards the middle and top stitch them.

Your front piece should now look like this:

7. Pin the waist line of your skirt piece between the two waist band pieces. Make sure they’re all
centred properly. This should leave you with two long stretches of waistband on each side. Stitch
in place.

8. Turn the waistband out, press the seam and top stitch it.
You should now have two halves of the apron (front piece and skirt), looking something
like this:

9. Gather the bottom of your front piece slightly to fit the shape of your bust. Pin this
bottom edge to the upper edge of the outer half of the waist band. Stitch in place.
10. Tuck the seam allowance in along the whole waist band (both the unattached inner half,
as well as the whole length of both halves) and top stitch in place. Also tuck in the ends to
finish them off as well.

11. Pin your shoulder straps in place on

your waist band, wherever feels most
comfortable for you. Make sure to also
tuck in the raw edges of your shoulder
straps here before you stitch them in
place.
12. Take your pockets. Double fold around the unstitched edges. You can either just pin them
to the skirt like this, or (to get a neater result) baste the folds before pinning the pockets into
place. Place them wherever you wish to have them. Only pin the smaller pockets into place
first and topstitch them before pinning the larger pockets onto the skirt- overlapping the
smaller ones. I usually sew my pockets with two seams- one along the very edge, and one
roughly 0,5 centimeres in.

You are now finished and ready to go out and get yourself properly
dirty. Well done you!
