experiencing a lot of adjustments due to the pandemic, and it is

Specifically, this module will help you to
a. recognize the English vowels, consonant sounds and diphtongs ; and
b. apply the primary and secondary stress in pronunciation.

Speech sounds are classified as vowels, consonants, and
diphthongs. Those which are produced with relatively little obstruction
of vocalized breath are called vowels; those which are produced by
obstructing exhalation are called consonants; and those composed of
two vowels but pronounced in close succession and blended into one
gliding fashion are called diphthongs.

THE INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET (IPA)


The IPA was first published in 1888 by the Association
Phonetique Internationale (International Phonetic Association), a group of
French language teachers founded by Paul Passy. The aim of the
organization was to devise a system for transcribing the sounds of speech
which was independent of any particular language and applicable to all
languages.
A phonetic script for English created in 1847 by Isaac Pitman
and Henry Ellis was used as a model for the IPA.
Uses of the IPA
1. The IPA is used in dictionaries to indicate the pronunciation of
words.
2. It has often been used as a basis for creating new writing systems
for previously unwritten languages.
3. It is used in some foreign language text books and phrase books
to transcribe the sounds of languages which are written with non-
Latin alphabets. It is also used by non-native speakers of English
when learning to speak English.

CHAPTER 1| VOWEL SOUNDS

A vowel is a speech sound made by allowing the breath to flow


out of the mouth, without closing any part of the mouth or throat
(although the lips may move to create the correct sound, as in creating
the sound /o/.

Practice each word carefully with your teacher. Note that the words
increase in difficulty. The words marked with a plus sign + have more
than two syllables and some have more than one accent. See to it that
you understand the meaning of each. Those with asterisk * has the
sound at the final syllable.

Filipino students must be careful to avoid saying /e/ as in bait instead of
/ɪ/ in words like bargain and surface.

Occasionally, some words ending in –ATE may be used both as
verbs and as nouns or adjectives. In this case, there is a choice between
/I/ as in BIT or /eI/ as in BAIT. When used as a noun or as an adjective,
the ending –ATE of the word is pronounced /It/; when used as verbs, it
is pronounced /eIt/.

DIPHTHONG SOUNDS
A Diphthong is composed of two vowel sounds joined in one
syllable to form one speech sound. It is gliding monosyllabic speech
sound (as the vowel combination at the end of toy) that starts at or
near the articulatory position for one vowel and moves to or toward
the position of another.

A Consonant is a speech sound produced by blocking the flow of
air through the mouth (using the lips, teeth, tongue and palate.)

The suffix –s/ -es is pronounced /Iz/ if the final sound of the base

CHAPTER 2| STRESS

Stress is an important feature of speech communication that


deals with the variation of level and energy in pronouncing syllables. It is
the accent given to a syllable to give it more importance than the other
syllables and to make it stand out among them. Stressed syllables are
given (1) more force or intensity, (2) higher pitch and (3) longer duration.

Primary Stress ( ‛ ) is the loudest or strongest stress; while
Secondary Stress ( ’ ) is less forceful than the primary stress—it is next
to loudest.

GUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVE USE OF STRESS


There are no fixed rules for determining which syllable of a word
should be stressed. However, certain rules can be of help to language
learners of English.
1. Any monosyllabic word used in isolation is basically stressed.

2. Majority of two-syllable words are accented on the first syllable (3


out of 4).

b. That girl bought a bottle of expensive pérfùme.

3. Compound nouns have primary stress on the second component


and secondary stress on the first component.

b. Ana lives with her grándmòther.

4. Compound verbs have primary stress on the second component and


secondary stress on the first component.

b. The river overflówed its banks.

5. Numbers ending in teen may receive stress on the last syllable to
distinguish, for example, thirty and thirteen.

b. The highest possible score is fiftéen.
6. Many words show shift in stress to indicate their use either as nouns
or verbs. The noun is accented on the first syllable, the verb on the
second.

7. When suffix is added to a word, the new form usually retains the
