BETTA ORNAMENTAL FISH FARM

IN PHUKET PROVINCE, THAILAND

This project is the outcome of a group effort to whom credit and technical responsibility goes. The
project is based on an assignment which was given to course participants and supervised by Dr. Abdel
Rahman El Gamal as a part of “Fish Culture Development” Training course. This annual course is
organized by the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture - (EICA). Names of the team and
countries are shown in the following slide; their portraits are in the last slide. 2009

• Ornamental fish keeping is today the


second most popular hobby after
photography.
• Fish keeping is gradually replacing outdoor
leisure activities.
• Growing awareness of environmental and
nature issues has added to the attraction of
fish keeping.
• Fish keeping is also becoming popular for
health reasons (as a stress reliever).
Ornamental Fish Trade

• The ornamental fish trade has developed into a multi


billion dollar industry.

• It is contributing significantly as a foreign exchange


earner and as a source of employment in many
developing countries.

• The annual wholesale value of global ornamental fish


trade is estimated to be around US$ 1 billion while the
retail value is around US$ 6 billion.

Siamese fighting fish
Locally known as: Plakad (Thailand)
Family: Osphronemidae
Carnivorous fish. Feeding on mosquito, larvae,
bloodworms, and small insect.
Geographical distribution: Asia and Africa
Habitat: reservoirs swamp and river
PROJECT RATIONALE
1. The Important of ornamental fish in the world market.
2. The problem of small scale fishermen in Phuket Province.

2.1 Limitation of coastal fishery resources.


2.2 Lack of investment capital.
2.3 Lack of bargaining power at the market.
2.4 Lack of infrastructure and public utilities.
2.5 Lack of alternative sources of income.
Project Objectives:
To provide the small scale fishermen with
alternative sources of income by introducing
the betta fish farm

Period:
One year (January – December 2010)

Target Production: To produce 10,000 fish of bettas at


the end of one cycle/100,000 fish a year.

INPUTS AND ITS USES:

1. Fry
Getting fry from the dealer.
Total length: 1-2 cm

2. Culture container

Bottle of varying size are required for culture. The volume of the
bottle ranges 0.75 – 2.50 Liters

Methylene Blue, Methylene Yellow, Ampicilin, Vitamins, Potassium
permanganate, Copper sulphate, Sodium Chloride, etc may be used for
preventing / treating diseases.

4. Fish Feed
Fry fed mainly with pellets, Mosquito larvae and Blood worms.
5. Aeration equipments
A small air pump with small tubes will be used for aeration.
