1. Purpose / Scope :

A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is a written set of guidelines to perform the Operation activity of
Equipment or System in effective manner to ensure safety and reliability of equipment or system.

This document is to gives precise information about the Operating procedure to be followed for Operation
of the Gas Turbines of OGT in an effective and safe manner and to meet the optimum standards of
operational reliability and continuity.

In OGT Facility 2 No’s of Gas turbines of BHEL make installed at CPP.

General design data :

Model series : MS5001.


Model no. : PG5371PA.
Machine no. : GT226 & GT227.
Cycle : Cogeneration.
Shaft rotation : Counter clockwise.
Turbine shaft speed : 5100 RPM.
Compressor Pressure ratio : 10
Output : 21.6 MW ( Base ).
Design (site ) conditions : 38 ° C ambient @ 74% RH at a altitude 5m above MSL.
Fuel : Natural gas.

2. HSE Considerations:

1. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is to be displayed in the operational area.


2. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) are mandatory for operation and maintenance team.
3. Permit to work system to be strictly followed for any jobs to be carried out.
4. Ensuring healthiness of fire suppression systems provided at various locations.

4. Key Responsibility :

A) Shift In-charge of CPP operation:


 Shift In-charge of CPP operation is responsible for effective and safe Operational activities of
the plant.
 To monitor the activities of team and to ensure effective utilization of shift man power.
 To ensure timely issuance and closure of permits as per job requirement.
 To ensure compliance of all safety norms and guidelines.
 To maintain and record equipment parameters, preparation of shift reports, incident
reports ( if any ) etc.,
 To assist and guide panel operators.
B) Shift Electrical engineer of CPP Operation:
 Shift Electrical Engineer of CPP operation is responsible for readiness of electrical system,
synchronization .
 To manage safe and effective switch gear operations .
 To ensure the healthiness of battery chargers, UPS, Batteries, Field drives and all other
electrical systems with the support of contractual O&M team.
 To assist CPP Shift In-charge in day to day activities.

C) Control room & field operators of O&M Contract:


 Control Room & Field Operators of O&M Contract are responsible for identifying field
observations
 To monitor and control the field parameters including the electrical equipments in switch
gear room and also to check all the parameters within the operational limits.If any abnormal
found the same to be inform to the respective Shift-In charge
 To closely monitor the parameters during startup of any equipments.
 To visit gas skid and all the compartments in gas turbine in shift for monitoring any gas leak
using LEL detectors and inform the same to the respective Shift-In charge immediately.
 To ensure compliance of all safety norms and guidelines.
 To ensure the usage of appropriate tools and tackles.
5. Procedure :

Startup Checks:

The following check sheets are to be duly filled after thorough checks before startup by the shift team
and signed by respective Shift In-charge and maintenance in charge for ensuring the equipment
availability for safe and effective operation of the plant.

If no leaks observed, open further battery limit isolation valve to increase


pressure up to 40 bar & check for leaks.
If no leaks observed, open full open battery limit isolation valve to increase
pressure up to 50 bar & check for leaks.
Maintain 40 bar in the downstream of HP to LP PRS by manually adjusting
the control valve.
Maintain gas pressure of 20 bar in the downstream of LP to fine filter PRS
Line-up HRSG PRS & maintain gas pressure of 5 bar in the downstream of
HRSG PRS to supply gas to Flare.
Open the Manual Isolation valve (6” Ball Valve).
Ensure the Y –Strainer vent line isolation valves are closed Activities considering
Location : Accessory Compartment gas is charged up to the
Ensure Gas condensate Drain Tank level is low. GT.
Line-up Gas Condensate Drain Tank pump to Slop Tank if the level is high.

b) Startup Permissives. :

“READY TO START” status in GT Mark Vie will be available only when all the following start
checks are satisfied.
Note: Signals in the proper start to permit a start are shown in GREEN.
A GREEN signal is required to start the unit.
Signals which are RED inhibits start request.

G. Multiple Starts Permissive – L2FZ Timer is set at 15 secs for start command.

This permissive is to ensure all controllers

Start Checks-2 There are 5 groups for vibration monitoring.


Group 1 : BB1 & BB2 – Turbine Bearing 1
Group 2 : BB4 & BB5 – Turbine Bearing 2
Group 3 : BB10 & BB11 – Gen.Bearing 1
a. Vibration start Inhibit-L39VD3 Group 4 : BB12 & BB13 – Gen.Bearing 2
Group 5 : BB7, BB8,BB9 – Load Gear Box
If both probes in any group are unhealthy, it
will inhibit the startup permissive.
If one probe is healthy, it will give
permissive.

The status of this permissive should be in


GREEN. If it is RED it indicates Master
b. Loss of Master Protect trip time delay-L4Y Protection Signal –L4 is unhealthy.

Master Protective trip is the master


integrator of the following individual trip
logics :
a. L4PST – Protective Status Trip Logic
c. Master Protective trip-L4T b. L4PRET –Preignition Trip
c. L4POST – Post Ignition Trip
d. L3SMT – Starting Device Trip
e. L4IGVT – IGV Control Trouble Trip
f. GT STOP
Note: If any of the above trips is persisting,
L4T status will be unhealthy.

GCV, SRV, LVDT servo valves should be
healthy.

c) GT Startup Sequence. :

i. Following selection in GT Mark VI e main screen to be done.


a. Mode Select : AUTO & give Execute Command ( Status is changed from
OFF COOLDOWN to READY TO START )
b. Governor Mode : Droop
c. Cycle Selection : Simple
d. Load Select: Not Required.
ii. On giving “START” EXECUTE command the following is initiated :
a. AOP (Auxiliary Oil Pump) is started.
b. Jaw clutch solenoid 20 CS-1 energized.
c. Jaw clutch engages
d. Hydraulic ratchet pump starts.
e. Master protective system circuit is energized (L4).
f. AHOP (Auxiliary Hydraulic Oil Pump) starts.
g. Diesel engine solenoid valve (20DV) is deenergized ( Valve is open ).
h. Diesel engine starting motor (88DS) starts for 5 sec.
i. Diesel engine starts.
j. Diesel engine reaches idle speed 700-900 rpm.
k. Diesel warm up timer T2DW starts (120 sec.)
l. Hydraulic ratchet start continuous ratcheting.
m. Turbine rotates along with engine & an L14HR drop out (Turbine Breakaway from
Zero speed) happens, fuel gas vent valve solenoid 20 VG-1 energized.
n. After completion of DE warm-up timer T2DW of 120 secs, Diesel engine accelerating
solenoid (20DA-2) is energized for 20 secs & diesel engine accelerates up to 1900
RPM .After 3 secs of deenergisation of 20 DA2, 20DA-1 energized and holds diesel
engine RPM speed to 1300 to 1500 rpm.
o. Starting clutch solenoid 20CS-1 is de energized; jaw clutch is engaged by torque of
diesel engine.
p. Hydraulic ratchet pump stops.
q. Turbine accelerates to min. firing speed (Cranking speed L14HM picks up).

r. Turbine purge timer T2TV starts for 5 minutes.


s. After completion of purge timer, turbine firing (T2F) starts for 60 secs.
t. Both spark plugs energized as command for ignition transformer goes for 30 secs.
u. FSR is set to firing value. FSKSV-FI (19.5%).
v. IF no flame is detected in both scanners with in firing timer (T2F).Turbine will trip
generating failure to ignite alarm.
w. If both flame scanner detects flame with in firing timer, FSR is set to warm up value
FSKSU-WU (14.5%) & turbine warm up timer (T2W) starts for 60 secs..
x. After completion of warm-up timer, Starting Diesel Engine solenoid 20DA2 is
energized & 20DA1 is deenergized resulting in full speed of 1900 rpm of DE. On
completion of warm up timer, FSR is increased to acceleration limit FSKSU-1A. (This
value is limited by speed & temp. control)
y. Turbine compt vent fan & load gear compt vent fan in lead mode starts.
z. At 51% speed, L14HA pick up indicating Turbine is on acceleration.
aa. Jaw clutch disengages at 65% speed.
bb. Diesel engine solenoid 20DA-2 de energized.
cc. Diesel engine runs at idle speed of 700-900 rpm for 5 minutes
dd. After completion of 5 mts, 20DV is energized & stops Diesel Engine.
ee. At Turbine speed of 80%, IGV opens from 42° to 57°.
ff. At 95% speed L14HS picks up (Operating speed) & both compressor bleed valves get
closed
gg. AOP & AHOP stops.
hh. Full Speed No Load is achieved ( FSNL) and machine is ready for synchronising.
Procedure for synchronization:
1. Ensure excitation is ON . Check the generator terminal voltage (11kV).
2. In 11 kV HT panel GTG Breaker Local/Remote switch should be in Remote Position.
Synch through Mark Vie:
3. Ensure in Mark Vie, Auto/ Remote selection in Auto. Mark Vie will automatically
give the close command to the GTG-2 Breaker.
Synch through SCAP Panel:
4. Ensure that in Mark Vie, Auto/ Remote selection in Remote. In SCAP panel further
there is a control selection switch of SCAP/ECS. It should be in SCAP.
5. Connect the sync trolley in the GTG- Breaker Socket and switch ON the Synch
trolley.
6. Place the Auto/Manual DB switch in Auto and wait for the 12’0 Clock in
Synchroscope and give Synch Command. GTG- breaker will be closed.
Synch through ECS:
7. Ensure that in Mark Vie, Auto/ Remote selection in Remote. In SCAP panel further
there is a control selection switch of SCAP/ECS. It should be in ECS.
8. Double click the breaker icon on HMI and Click the Select button followed by Check
button then start the Auto synchroniser. ECS will automatically give the close
command to the GTG- Breaker.

d) Activities after FSNL. :

SOP for Gas Turbine Startup

1. Once the GT breaker is closed on dead bus and GT power is restored, C losure of
incomers of PMCC should be done after synchronizing with Black start DG.
2. On restoration of normal power supply to GT MCC the remaining drives being fed
from GTMCC will be connected and started.
3. The restoration of cooling water system is envisaged manually.After normalization
of cooling water system by process and after getting required pressure (5 Kg/cm2),
Main cooling water valves to be opened. And after ensuring the normalcy of the
system, Emergency cooling water system ( Black start cooling system ) can be shut
down by locally or through DCS and manually closing the black start line up valves.

iii. Control Room Engineer to note down & monitor all following parameters during startup and
normal operation of gas turbine.
 Turbine operating data
 Gas fuel system
 Exhaust temperatures.
 Bearing metal and lube oil drain temperatures.
 Wheel space temperatures.
 Turbine compartment temperatures.
 Vibrations ( Siesmic )
 Vibrations ( Shaft )
 Flame intensity.
 Lube and hydraulic oil pressure
 Auxillary and electrical system in service.
 Water injection system.
 Generator data and winding temperatures.

iv. Field Engineer to check for oil leakages, abnormal sound, flue gas leakages during startup.
v. Field Engineer to check for gas leakages using Portable LEL meter in accessory & Turbine
compartment during startup.
vi. Field Engineer to note down & monitor all following parameters during normal operation of gas
turbine.
 Fuel gas conditioning skid pressure and temperature.
 Cooling water system parameters.
 Diesel tank and Lube oil tank levels.
