What’s New

Before we engage in playing the game of basketball, it is important to identify

your Personal Maximum Heart Rate and your Maximum heart Rate to avoid
unnecessary injuries. Below is the formula to compute for your PMHR and MHR. Let
us start.
Personal Maximum Heart Rate = 220 – (age) = _____ bpm (beats per minute)
Maximum Heart Rate = PMHR x 0.60 = ____ bpm (this is the lowest expected bpm
for doing vigorous activities such as basketball)
= PMHR x 0.85 =____ bpm (this is the highest expected bpm
for doing vigorous activities)

Follow the formula and answer this in your PE notebook.

3
What is It

Health-Related Fitness plays a very important role in family wellness. Your

Health-Related Fitness Plan must be simple, enjoyable and suitable to the needs of
you and your family to attain maximum level of physical wellness. In line with this, you
should plan your fitness activity using these:

FITT – Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time

Frequency – it is how often you do the exercise trainings. For example; 3 times per
week, 2 times a day, 4 times a week

Intensity – is the progression of the work/exercise done. You should do your training
exercises from moderate to vigorous to avoid injuries.

Type – the specific kind of work done like walking, running and jogging.

Time – refers to your target duration of doing your fitness exercises. You should do
your exercises with progression, for example jogging 30 minutes a day for the 1st
week then adding another 30 minutes of jogging on the next week.

When you plan your fitness exercises, you should plan it using the acronym
SMARTER:

S – Specific (you should have a definite or direct goal)

M – Measurable (your goals must be measurable to gauge yourself)
A – Attainable (your goals should be stimulating, neither too comfortable nor too
difficult)
R – Realistic (see to it that your goals can be done)
T – Time bound (your goals should be achieved within a given time)
E – Exciting (goals should be motivational and encouraging)
R – Recorded (goals are to be recorded to assess yourself properly)

BASKETBALL

Nature and Background of the Sport:

• Basketball is a team sport wherein the objective is to shoot a ball through a
basket horizontally.
• 2 teams of five players play on marked rectangular court with a basket at each
width end.
• A regular basketball hoop/ring is 18 inches in diameter and ten feet high.
• A field goal score 2 or 3 points.
• The team with the most points at the end of the game wins but additional
overtime maybe issued when the game ends in a draw until a winner is decided.

4
• Various violations are called a foul. There are types of fouls Disruptive Physical
contact (personal foul) where in a free throw is awarded and Technical foul
which can be issued when certain infractions occur usually unsportsmanlike
conduct (spitting on player, etc.) by a coach or player. A technical foul gives the
opposing team free throws and retains ball possession.
• Commonly used techniques in basketball are; shooting, passing, dribbling and
rebounding.
• There are different player positions like the “center”, “power forward”, “small
forward”, “point guard” and “shooting guard”. Each of these players has his own
roles in the game of basketball.

History:
• Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Canadian clergyman,
educator and physician James Naismith.
• He introduced the game when he was teaching in Young Men’s Christian
Association Training School (now Springfield College).
• The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey; the
first ball was a soccer ball.
• The teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets
affixed to the walls.
• By 1897-1898, teams of five became the standard. The game rapidly spread
in USA and Canada.
• In 1934, the first college games were staged in New York City’s Madison
Square Garden and college basketball became more popular.
• By 1950’s, basketball has become a major college sport.
• In 1898, the National Basketball League was formed to protect the players
from exploitation and promote fewer rough games. The league only lasted
for five years.
• In 1949 two subsequent professional leagues, the National Basketball
League and Basketball Association of America was made and later merged
to create the National Basketball Association or the NBA.
