WEEK 8 – HEADLESS DAIMON

PGM V. 96-172 (p. 103 in Betz)

PURPOSE: To Gain Control Over All Daimons

CORE SPELL:

Prep: Write the “six names” on a phylactery, and after pressing it to your brow, read the
six names aloud while facing North. Then say,

SUBJECT TO ME ALL DAIMONS, SO THAT EVERY DAIMON, WHETHER

HEAVENLY OR AERIAL OR EARTHLY OR SUBTERANEAN OR TERRESTRIAL OR
AQUATIC MIGHT BE OBEDIENT TO ME, AND EVERY ENCHANTMENT AND
SCOURGE WHICH IS FROM GOD.

Then proceed to the main conjuration:

I SUMMON YOU, HEADLESS ONE:

WHO CREATED HEAVEN & EARTH,

WHO CREATED NIGHT AND DAY,
WHO CREATED LIGHT AND DARKNESS!

YOU ARE OSORONNOPHRIS,

WHOM NONE HAS EVER SEEN;
YOU ARE IABAS, YOU ARE IAPOS.

YOU HAVE DITINGUISHED THE JUST AND THE UNJUST,

YOU HAVE MADE FEMALE AND MALE,
YOU HAVE REVEALED SEED AND FRUITS,
YOU HAVE MADE MEN LOVE EACH OTHER AND HATE EACH OTHER.

I AM MOSES YOUR PROPHET,

TO WHOM YOU HAVE TRANSMITTED YOUR MYSTERIES,
CELEBRATED BY ISRAEL.
YOU HAVE REVEALED THE MOIST AND THE DRY AND ALL NOURISHMENT:
HEAR ME!

I AM THE MESSENGER OF THE PHAROAH OSORRONOPHRIS.

I AM THE ONE WHO BEGETS AND DESTROYS
I AM THE FAVOR OF AION
MY NAME IS A HEART ENCIRCLED BY A SERPENT

COME FORTH AND FOLLOW!

ENHANCEMENTS:

1. The Sorcerer should face North for the spell. (The star Polaris may have been considered to be
an epiphany of the Hypercosmic overgod, because all constellations rotate around the
unmoving North Star, just as all lesser deities were presumed to attend the immovable and
immutable overgod who resided at the center of all creation.)
2. The sorcerer is urged to use a phylactery made from “new papyrus.”
3. The “six names” to be written on the phylactery are often considered to be AOTH ABRAOTH
BASYM ISAK SABAOTH IAO. However, it is possible that “six” is a scribal error, and the text
should read “seven names,” which would likely indicate the seven vowels as portrayed in the
same phylactery used previously in the spells covered in Week 5 (“Bear, Bear!”) and Week 7
(“Sherd Sword”).
4. A beneficial character should be added to the phylactery which looks like this :>

NOTES:

1. Regarding the various epithets and magical voices:

a. OSORRONOPHRIS means “The Beautiful Osiris”, according to Betz.
b. IABAS and IAPOS are Samaritan names for the Abrahamic God.
c. ADONAI means “Lord”
d. SABAOTH means “Lord of Hosts”
e. IAO is a Hellenic version of YHVH
f. BASYM derives from a Hebraic word meaning “In the name of”.
g. ISAK probably references the Biblical patriarch Isaac, son of Abraham, grandfather of the
12 Tribes of Judah.
h. AOTH: Scholar Gershom Scholem states that “in imitation of (Sabaoth), the magicians
introduced theophoric nomina ending with OTH. This syllable becomes the “magic
suffix” par excellence…The possibility is not entirely to be excluded that in some circles
the name of the Egyptian God Thot had an additional influence on this prevalent use of
the Hebrew ending -oth in these names.” – Jewish Gnosticism, Merkabah Mysticism,
and Talmudic Tradition (1960), p. 72, fn. 23.
i. ABRASAX is a name for an apotropaic aspect of the Gnostic overgod. He is typically
portrayed as an anguipede: a rooster-serpent carrying a flail in one hand and a shield
bearing the words IAO on the other.
j. PYR means fire.
k. AION is the anthropomorphized god of Eternity from late antiquity, often portrayed as a
man with a lion-head, holding a key, encircled by a serpent.
2. The “Headless Daimon” being summoned is clearly an amalgamation of Osiris and YHVH. These
two overgods are both judges of the dead with a great interest in moral conduct, who have
authority over (and in YHVH’s case, animosity toward) chthonic/infernal daimons. (See also PDM
Suppl. 118 , p. 327 in Betz]: “Let Osiris stop sleeping while his head is far from him” –
referencing his dismemberment by Seth). Interestingly, the PGM contains three other shorter,
incomplete Headless Rites which invoke the demon-lord Bes. This makes sense, as Bes was
honored by ancient Egyptians in their kitchens and bedrooms because (like the Near Eastern
demon Pazuzu), his authority over all lower demons made him a valuable ally in the home,
where he served an apotropaic function. (See PGM VII. 244-5 , p. 123 in Betz: “You are the
headless god, the one who has a head and his face on his feet / dim-sighted Besas.” See also
PGM CII. 1-17, p. 309 in Betz: “I call upon you…Strong Besas…You are not a daimon, but the
blood of [two falcons]…and of the 30 and of the 104 falcons who are also chattering and
watching before the head of Osiris”). See also PGM VIII. 64-110, p. 147 in Betz. All three share a
nearly identical “headless” conjuration, with the third being the most complete.
3. The Hellenic god of the Underworld (referred to by Greeks as Hades or Aidoneos) was
considered to be invisible. This spell’s reference to an “invisible” god “whom none has ever
seen” reinforces the idea of a deity who rules in darkness, below the surface of the earth, as do
Hades and Osiris. Likewise the Bible contains multiple passages where YHVH is heard but not
seen. When YHVH is seen, it is in theophanies of wind and flame, such as a burning bush, a pillar
of cloud by day, or a pillar of fire by night.
4. The spell’s first theosis, or godface, occurs when declaring oneself to be Moses. The Bible in
Exodus references Moses as being a “friend of God” to whom God spoke “face to face.”
Presumably the goal in declaring oneself to be Moses is to draw upon the goodwill and
friendship of the invoked god.
5. The spell’s second godface occurs when declaring oneself to be the messenger (angelos) of the
invoked god. Having been invoked, the god’s messenger appears and speaks through the
sorcerer, invoking the god by his true name to complete the compulsive formula (“This is your
true name: ARBATHIO REIBET etc”).
6. The spell’s third and final godface occurs when, in response to the conjuration, the Headless
Daimon appears, speaking through the sorcerer (“I am the Headless Daimon…”), declaring his
unique epiphany (“My name is Heart Encircled by a Serpent”), and exorcising all malicious
daimons (“Come forth, and follow!”).
