Pre-debut
Preparations for NCT began at the end of 2013, through SM Entertainment's training
group, SM Rookies .The members were recruited through various auditions, such as
Johnny, Yuta, Ten, Mark, and Renjun who joined the agency through SM Global
Auditions , while the rest were recruited through street recruits, personal
recommendations, and community entertainment events.
In January 2016, the founder of SM Entertainment, Lee Soo-man , gave a presentation
at SM Coex Artium entitled "SMTOWN: Neo Culture Technology 2016" which
discussed the agency's plans to form a new male vocal group aligned with their
"cultural content" strategy. , where several different teams will make their respective
debuts in various countries around the world.
2016: NCT U, NCT 127 and NCT Dream debut
On April 4, 2016, SM Entertainment announced NCT's first unit, NCT U ("U"
for United ), which at that time consisted of six members: Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung,
Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark. NCT U released the digital single "The 7th Sense" (Taeyong,
Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark) on April 9 and "Without You" in two versions on
April 10 (Korean version sung by Taeil, Doyoung. , and Jaehyun, and the Chinese
version with Kun from SM Rookies ).
On April 9, 2016 U NCT make their first broadcast appearance on On Air NCT Show-
Day 1 NCT Life at V Live hosted by Heechul of Super Junior . On the same day, they
held their first show in China at the 16th Music Feng Yun Bang Awards with Chinese
members Kun and WinWin. On April 15, they made their Korean debut at Music
Bank . They have appeared in all three seasons of their reality series NCT Life ,
featuring other trainees from SM Rookies.
On July 1, SM Entertainment announced NCT's second unit, NCT 127 . The unit is
based in Seoul, with 127 representing Seoul's longitude coordinates. This unit
consists of seven members: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, WinWin, Mark and
Haechan. On July 7, they made their debut appearance on the music program M
Countdown , featuring the debut singles "Fire Truck" and "Once Again." Their debut
mini album NCT # 127 was released digitally on July 10 and physically on July 11. On
July 29, they released the single " Taste the Feeling " for the SM Station projectin
collaboration with Coca-Cola .
On August 18, SM Entertainment announced NCT's third unit, NCT Dream . The unit
debuted with seven members: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and
Jisung. Their first single "Chewing Gum" was released on August 24, and they had
their debut appearance on M Countdown the following day.
On December 6, the five members of NCT 127 (Yuta, Taeyong, Jaehyun, Mark, and
Winwin) released a special dance music video for the song "Good Thing" in
collaboration with W Korea. The song was released on NCT 127's second mini
album, Limitless . On December 20, NCT 127 released the music video for
"Switch." The single was previously used as an additional single on NCT 127's debut
mini album and featured members of SM's training group SR15B .
2017: Promotional activities for NCT 127 and NCT Dream
On December 27, 2016, NCT 127 announced that they would be making a comeback
with the addition of two members: Doyoung and Johnny. On January 5, 2017, NCT
127 released two music videos for "Limitless" and performed the song on M
Countdown . Their second mini album Limitless was released digitally on January 6
and physically on January 9. The album debuted at number one on
the Billboard 's World Albums chart, and the lead single was subsequently selected
as one of the best K-pop songs of 2017 by Dazed .
On February 1, 2017, NCT Dream announced that they would release their first
physical single album entitled The First on February 9, 2017. SM Entertainment
announced that Jaemin would not be able to participate in this comeback due to
health concerns. NCT Dream returned to the M Countdown stage , performing the
singles "My First and Last" and "Dunk Shot". On February 14, NCT Dream won first
place on the 100th episode of SBS MTV The Show , marking the victory. the first
musical event for an NCT unit. NCT Dream was also revealed as the official
ambassador for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup. They released the official theme song,
"Trigger the Fever", on March 15th.
On March 8, NCT 127's Johnny and Jaehyun were announced to be broadcasters
for SBS Power FM's new program , NCT's Night Night , which will air from March 20.
On June 14, NCT 127 released their third mini album, Cherry Bomb . They returned to
the M Countdown stage with the singles "Cherry Bomb" and "0
Mile". Billboard and Idolator voted "Cherry Bomb" as one of the best K-pop songs of
2017.
On August 17, NCT Dream released their first mini album, We Young . They first
performed the song on M Countdown . In December, NCT Dream released their first
Christmas song, "Joy".
2018: New members, large-scale projects, NCT 2018: Empathy, and NCT
2020: Resonance
In January 2018, NCT U (Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun) released the single "Timeless"
as part of the SM Station project .
In mid-January 2018, NCT introduced NCT 2018, a project that involved all 18 NCT
members. On January 30, 2018, SM Entertainment released a video titled "NCT 2018
Yearbook # 1," which features the existing members and introduces three new
members, Kun, Lucas and Jungwoo. In February, NCT released a series of
documentary videos entitled NCTmentary as part of NCT 2018.
On March 14, 2018, NCT released its first album, NCT 2018 Empathy . The album
consisted of six singles, featuring all of NCT's currently active units: "Boss", "Baby
Don't Stop", "Yestoday" (NCT U), "Go" (NCT Dream), “Touch” (NCT 127), and “Black
on Black” (NCT 2018).
On May 5, NCT topped Billboard 's Emerging Artists chart , marking the first K-pop
singer to take the lead on the list.
On September 3, NCT Dream released their second mini album We Go Up with the
title single of the same name. SM confirmed that Mark will be leaving NCT Dream
after completing promotions.
On October 12, NCT 127 released their first studio album, Regular-Irregular , with the
lead single "Regular". With the addition of Jungwoo as a new member, the group
officially has 10 members. For the album, NCT 127 focused on promotion in the
United States.
On November 23, NCT 127 released the re-release edition of Regular-Irregular ,
titled Regulate , along with the title single "Simon Says". It was announced that
Winwin would not be participating in the comeback activities as he is preparing to
debut with WayV .
On December 28th, NCT Dream released the single "Candle Light" as part of the SM
Station project .
2019: WayV debut, NCT 127 concert tour and new projects for NCT
Dream, WayV, and NCT U
On December 31, 2018, SM Entertainment announced NCT's fourth
unit, WayV ( pinyin : 威神 V). The unit is based in China and consists of seven
members: Kun, Winwin, Ten, Lucas, Hendery, Xiaojun, and Yangyang. WayV is
managed under Label V, a Chinese label that collaborates with SM. WayV officially
debuted on January 17, 2019 with the Chinese version of the song "Regular" by NCT
127 . Their debut single album, The Vision , was released digitally and also includes a
Chinese version of NCT 127's "Come Back" and an original song called "Dream
Launch".
On January 26, 2019, NCT 127 embarked on their first concert tour, Neo City - The
Origin , which visited Korea, Japan, America and Europe. In the middle of this tour,
they released the single "Wakey-Wakey" on March 18 which was also included in
their first Japanese studio album, Awaken , which was released on April 17.
Their fourth mini album, We Are Superhuman , was released on May 24 with the title
single " Superhuman ."
On May 9, WayV released their first mini album, Take Off , along with the title track of
the same name, "Take Off."
On June 6, NCT Dream released "Don't Need Your Love," a collaboration
with HRVY on SM Station Season 3. NCT Dream released their third mini album, We
Boom , and the lead single, "Boom," on the 26th. July.
On October 29th, WayV released their second mini album, Take Over the Moon , with
the lead single "Moonwalk".
On December 13th, NCT U (consisting of Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun and Haechan)
released the single "Coming Home" as part of the SM Station X project.
2020
On January 27th, NCT 127 released the MV for a prize song titled "Dreams Come
True" which was followed by the release of their second studio album Neo Zone on
March 6 with the title single "Kick It". On April 7, SM Entertainment announced that
they would be releasing a repackaged version of the album in May.
On September 22, NCT introduced NCT 2020, a project similar to NCT 2018, but this
project also includes 21 NCT members with the addition of 3 WayV members
(Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang ) and 2 new members, namely Shotaro Osaki and
Jung. Sungchan, they also released a music video titled "NCT 2020 YearParty" the
following day.
