3. Why did the war begin?

The name the Hundred Years’ War has been used by historians since
the beginning of the nineteenth century to describe the long conflict that
pitted the kings and kingdoms of France and England against each other
from 1337 to 1453.
Two factors lay at the origin of the conflict: firstly, the status of the
duchy of Guyenne (or Aquitaine)-though it belonged to the kings of
England, it remained a fief of the French crown, and the kings of
England wanted independent possession; secondly, as the closest
relatives of the last direct Capetian king (Charles IV, who had died in
1328), the kings of England from 1337 claimed the crown of France.
When in 1328 Charles of France had died without issue, Edward’s
mother Isabella had claimed her brother’s throne for her son against the
rival claim of Charle’s cousin, Philip VI of Valois, who ascended it. The
succession thus pitted a sister’s claim against that of a male cousin.
Under French Salic law a female could not inherit the throne. England
disagreed and, with Edward’s assumption of full power in 1330, the
matter went to dispute. Years of tortuous diplomacy led to French
support for Scottish raids over the English border and for pirate attacks
on England’s wool and wine trade with the continent. In 1337 the two
monarchs, Edward and Philip, declared themselves at war, and in 1340
hostilities commenced with a naval battle at Sluys. England under
Edward’s personal command defeated the French for control of the
Channel and thus won freedom to transport an army to France. Some 200
French ships were abandoned as their crews dived overboard to escape a
hail of English arrows. The sea was so filled with blood it was said the
fish spoke French. Thus began what was later dubbed the Hundred Years
War.
