WHAT IS Fundraising is the process of
soliciting financial support and is an

FUNDRAISING? essential way for most non-profits

to bring in revenue for their
organization’s mission.

Fundraising can determine the
future of an organization. A strong
fundraising effort can ensure that
adequate funds are available to
support all activities.
Sustainability is the ability to
maintain operations and activities at

IS ABOUT OUR CHILDREN AND
OUR GRANDCHILDREN, AND THE

resources are finite, and should be
used conservatively and wisely with
a lens to long-term priorities and
consequences of the ways in which
resources are used.
WHY ORGANIZATIONS FAIL TO SUSTAIN

FUNDRAISING?
The most significant objective of organizations is
to develop awareness of their cause and raise
funds. However, organizations are struggling and
are incapable to cover their expenditures.

“It is the cry of the day for organizations to

formulate a strategy on how to build awareness
of the target community and cultivate enough
funds without high funds.”
| Ullah, Ahmad, & Khan (2012) International
Journal of Business, Humanities, & technology
Fundraising fails because goals are unrealistic.
Too often, fundraising goals are set based on the
gap between the existing funding and what still
needs to be raised to meet the budget.

“The higher the goal and shorter the time frame

of planning, the more critical it is for success to
be in place.”
| Stansbury (2020) Tallahassee Democrat
Findings from a community-based study of non-
profit organizations found that organizations
were faced with constant funding uncertainty
due to short timelines for programs, reporting
and evaluation requirements beyond capacity,
and expectations to demonstrate outcomes.

WHAT TO DO
NOW?
A good fundraising should provide
more than an opportunity to just
raise funds. Fundraising is also a
responsibility and a commitment.
THE FORMULA FOR
SUSTAINABLE 1 ASK
FUNDRAISING 2 THANK
3 REPORT
4 REPEAT
One of the biggest reasons that donors do not
give (or do not give for the second time) is
because they were never asked to give (or give
again). That is, “ask” is such a critical part of the
formula.

Asking matters and how you ask matters even

more.
ASK
To make an effective ask, the organization has to
establish why the donors should give to you.

Donors want to know now their giving will help

solve a problem, and they want to know that
their money is going to make a difference.

Make the donors understand that their gift has

ASK
meaning.
“Your donation will feed local
families experiencing food
insecurity.”

“Donate to us because we help

hungry people.”
ASK
Focus on creating ASKS that:

- show potential donors a problem

- show them how to be part of the
solution
- are specific
- ask for their help
ASK
Recognizing and appreciating people’s gifts is a
great exercise for the organization.

THANK Sincerely thanking someone for a gift or a favor

makes him or her feel great about giving to you.
This feeling is the key to retaining the donor.
“Thank you for your donation of Php

THANK 5,000.00. Please retain the following

details for your records.”
A great “thank you” note includes details like:

- A sincere statement that does not sound like

you wrote it under duress
- A statement that reiterates how the gift will
make a difference

THANK - A sentence about how the organization and the

community appreciate the donor’s involvement
- A simple ask that does not ask for additional
gift but some favors like watching a video or
following you on social media
- A note that you will be in touch
In this stage, the organization will report how
donors actually helped. The organization has to

REPORT
tell them how their money helped.

The donors are motivated by the desire to make

an impact on the world. If the organization can
report the impact, they will feel good about their
decision to give.
In reporting, the organization is fulfilling the
desire that inspired the donors to give in the first

REPORT
place. Thus, you have to tell them a complete
story.

“You gave to us because you want to

make a difference. Thank you! Here’s
exactly what you have accomplished.”
If you do not report their impact, you omit an

REPORT
important part of the story. You do not address
their desire to make a difference. They are not
fulfilled at the end of the cycle.

“You gave to us because you wanted to

make a difference. Thank you!”
“You gave to us because you want to make a

REPORT
difference. Thank you! Your Php 5,000.00 helped
pay for two days worth of water and electricity.”

Instead, focus on telling the stories of the people

your organization supports.
REPORT
“Your support helped feed this
family and hundreds of others.”
At this point, your donors feel great about giving

REPEAT
to you and know that the organization has used
their gifts wisely.

Now, it is time to invite them to continue to make

a difference by continuing their support.
When you ask again, reference the fact

REPEAT
that the donor has already made an
impact with his or her past support.
Recognizing past involvement shows
donors that they are valuable to your
organization.
THE FORMULA FOR
SUSTAINABLE Great fundraising is more than
FUNDRAISING just asking for money. Great
fundraising involves building
emotional connections with
donors who are invested in
changing the world with you.
THE FORMULA FOR
SUSTAINABLE ASK people to join you in making a difference by
donating

FUNDRAISING THANK them promptly and sincerely for their gifts

REPORT how donors made a difference with their

money

REPEAT connections by asking them to stay

involved with you through continuing their support

FINANCIAL
PLANNING One of the most important things in
sustainability is financial planning as
it provides strategy to secure the
financial resources needed to execute
the organization’s vision and mission.
Create an analysis of the current and
projected financial status of the
organization. This should include
detailed sources of revenues and uses
of expenses.
Determine what is owned (asset) and
what is owed (liability) as these two
will further determine the
organization’s net worth.

NET ASSET = ASSETS - LIABILITIES

Having sound financial practices will ensure
that management and potential funding
sources can measure the organization’s
sustainability. Also, it will help the
organization to make informed business
decisions.

Good financial reporting will allow the

organization to strengthen accountability and
transparency – improving donor’s trust.
OTHER WAYS TO A
SUSTAINABLE
FUNDRAISING
FOSTER A CULTURE OF GIVING
Organizations can work with the community by
educating the community members about the
interdependence between the organization and
the community, and the need for mutual support.

By encouraging donations from all community

CULTURE OF members, no matter how small, an organization

can broaden the funding base among community

GIVING members and establish a culture of giving.

UTILIZE TECHNOLOGY TO REACH NEW AUDIENCES
The effective use of technology for marketing of
organizations is necessary in remaining relevant
in the community and among funders.

There are lower cost social media outlets, such

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, that
could be utilized in communicating up-to-date

UTILIZE information without needing to expend significant

financial or technical resources.

TECHNOLOGY
ESTABLISH COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS
Establishing collaborative partnerships with other
organizations offers a means to efficiently and
effectively meet the needs of the community while
managing financial constraints of the
organization.

Do not be afraid to ask other organizations what

COLLABORATIVE
has worked for them and what has not worked.
Everyone wins when information are shared with

PARTNERSHIP
one another.
PROMOTE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Actively engaging the residents who are the
recipients of the services and programs of the
organization allows the residents to have a say or
word on how programs are created and
implemented, and may alleviate potential barrier.

Through community engagement, organizations

COMMUNITY will be able to balance the funding expectations,

challenges, and opportunities which will further

ENGAGEMENT allow the organization to understand the

community needs and to prepare on how to
engage to the community as a whole.
APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERISM
Fostering an environment for volunteers to serve
for a cause that they care about and within an
organization where their culture and values are
appreciated can promote a sense of loyalty and
commitment among volunteers.

Also, it is equally important to attempt to

understand and meet the specific needs of

VALUE OF volunteers. Making an effort to meet tangible

needs of the volunteers is necessary in building

VOLUNTEERISM an atmosphere that they are valued and included.
