a young girl, she loved reading and she did well at school

time there were no female medical students and Maria
became the first Italian woman to study to become a
doctor. In 1896 she finished College and became a doctor.
Later she was a teacher in Rome University but then she
left to work with 60 children of working families. She
opened a school in Rome in 1907 and started the
Montessori Method of teaching. She travelled a lot and in
the USA and Holland her ideas about teaching became
popular. Now there are many Montessori schools all round
the world. Maria died in Holland in 1952.
