ACTIVITY NO. 07

Answer the given questions below. (5 pts each)

1. When did the Philippines attained its first independence? Elaborate its
historical background in a whole paragraph.

After more than 300 years of Spanish colonialization, Filipino


Revolutionists won against the Spaniards. On June 12 1898, the Philippines was
able to raised its flag as a symbol of independence. As a result, by the virtue of
Malolos Constitution— the Philippines was declared as republic and Emilio
Aguinaldo—was elected as the first president of the 1 st Republic of the
Philippines.
However, Filipino-American war occurred in 1989 and resulted in the
defeat of Gen. Miguel Malvar in 1903. For this reason, peace movements started
as early as 1900. In consequence, Filipino’s started writing again to express their
sense of nationalism. Filipino writers went into all forms of literature like news
reporting, poetry, stories, plays, essay and novels. Their writings clearly depicted
their love of country and their longings for independence.

2. What was the state of literature during the time of the American
colonization?

The state of literature during the time of American colonization was very
diverse. Writers used 3 languages (Spanish, Tagalog and English) in writing
literary works. In the time of the first year of American period, Spanish and
Tagalog and the dialects of the different regions were predominantly used. The
literary piece that was written in Spanish usually depicts on nationalism like
honoring Rizal and other heroes. On the other hand, works that are written in
Tagalog showed the lamentations of the writers on the conditions of the country
and their attempts to arouse love for one’s native tongue. While, the writers in
English imitated the themes and methods of the Americans.
In addition, Philippine literary production during the American Period in the
Philippines was spurred by two significant developments in education and
culture. One is the introduction of free public instruction for all children of school
age and two, the use of English as medium of instruction in all levels of education
in public schools.

3. Name the various newspapers published during this period. Who were its
founders?

During this period the newspapers that were published are the: El Nuevo
Dia (The New Day/Ang Bagong Araw) -established by Sergio Osmenia in 1900;
El Grito Del Pueblo (The Call on the Nation/Ang Sigaw ng Bayan) –
established by Pascual Poblete in 1900; El Renacimiento (The Rebirth/Muling
Pagsilang) - founded by Rafael Palma in 1900; Bulletin - founded by Carson
Taylor; and Manila times- founded by Thomas Gowan.
