certified PADI Sidemount Divers receive credit toward the Tec Sidemount Diver course for
a portion of the knowledge development, Practical Application – Part 1, a portion of Dive
One skills, and Dives Two and Three. For more detail please refer to the Tec Sidemount Diver
Instructor Guide. In allowing credit, confirm that student divers have the knowledge and skills
covered by these course sections prior to continuing to the next topics, dives and skills.

Training
Two New Adventure Dives
Effective immediately, Sidemount and AWARE Shark Conservation have joined the list
of Adventure Dives divers can select for the Adventures in Diving program. Here’s how to
incorporate these dives into your training program. Adventures in Diving Program course
standards apply.

Sidemount Adventure Dive

To conduct this dive, you must be a PADI Sidemount Diver Instructor. Follow the PADI
Sidemount Diver Instructor Guide:
Knowledge Development: Divers learn about sidemount diving from your briefing, and
complete the knowledge review found in the appendix of the
instructor guide.
Confined Water/Practical Session: Divers demonstrate sidemount configuration set up skills
and practice using sidemount and trimming buoyancy in
confined water before the open water dive.
Adventure Dive: Divers complete Sidemount Diver course – Dive One.
Divers aged 15 or older are eligible for this Adventure Dive.

AWARE Shark Conservation Adventure Dive

Eco divers and shark supporters can participate in the
AWARE movement by taking the AWARE Shark Con-
servation Adventure Dive. Project AWARE provides all
course materials for download: AWARE Shark Con-
servation Distinctive Specialty Instructor Guide (v1.02
includes the AWARE Shark Conservation Adventure
Dive Training Record and PADI Specialty Training
Record), Lesson Guides and student Study Guide from
the Resource Zone at www.projectaware.org.
To conduct this dive you must be a PADI AWARE Shark
Conservation Diver Instructor. Follow the instructor guide:
Knowledge Development: Divers read the Study Guide (or
attend instructor-led presenta-
tion) and complete the knowledge
review.
Adventure Dive: Divers complete AWARE Shark
Conservation Diver course
– Dive One.
Divers aged 12 and older are eligible for this Adventure Dive.
Be sure to give divers the option to donate to conservation and receive a Project AWARE
version of the PADI certification card.

Look for the incorporation of these two new Adventure Dives into the PADI Adventures in
Diving manual, log books and other PADI materials when revision schedules allow.

Training
2012 Edition PADI Instructor Manual
If you’re a renewed PADI Member for 2012, download the 2012 (English version) PADI
Instructor Manual and errata document from the Pros’ Site/Training Essentials. Primarily, the
updates are based on new and revised programs released in the past year. Many significant changes
were already announced in past Training Bulletins. Here are a few other important changes and
clarifications:

General Standards and Procedures

Added text regarding, “Disabilities,” that defines PADI’s philosophy of providing training to
anyone who is medically cleared to dive.
Under “Standard Diver Equipment;” added a statement: “Familiarize divers with the equipment
they use during the course.” This general statement applies to all PADI courses and programs,
to ensure that those taking the course are acquainted with the function and use of the specific
equipment they use during training.
Under “Materials, Instructor,” added the underlined text: “Use all PADI diver level materials for
PADI courses and programs, as well as the PADI Instructor Manual, PADI’s Guide to Teaching
and the related instructor guides.”
Paperwork and Administrative Procedures, under Diving Fitness, No. 1, added the
underlined text:
1. A “yes” response on the PADI Medical Statement’s Divers Medical Questionnaire” section
requires written clearance to dive from a physician as a prerequisite to inwater activities.
This clearance is valid for one year.
If the student diver is in training after one year from the physician’s signature date on the medical
form, the diver must be medically reevaluated and approved for diving before continuing on with
the course; and before beginning a new course.
Adventures in Diving Program
Peak Performance Buoyancy Adventure Dive (also Dive One of the Peak Performance Buoyancy
Specialty Diver course), added this new performance requirement at the end: “Conduct post-dive
buoyancy check to confirm appropriateness of the amount of weight worn.”
This requirement helps the diver more fully understand weighting and trim by noting buoyancy
both at the beginning of the dive, and at the end of the dive after gas has been consumed – which
potentially changes the diver’s buoyancy. Divers can make adjustments to trim accordingly in
preparation for the next dive.
Master Scuba Diver
Take note that TecRec courses (as well as PADI
Specialty courses) count toward the five courses
necessary to achieve this rating.

Go through the errata for a

comprehensive look at the changes.
The 2012 printed (English version)
manual is also available.

Emergency First Response
Revised EFR Course Materials Available
Care for Children
The revised Emergency First Response Care for Children
Instructor Guide, participant manual, and DVD are
available in English. In addition to being completely
updated to reflect inclusion of the new ILCOR and
regional resuscitation council guidelines (as outlined in
past issues of the Training Bulletin and The Responder), the
Care for Children materials also have a new design, similar
to the recently-released Primary Care and Secondary Care
and CPR & AED materials.
The Care for Children course is great for parents,
teachers, coaches, child-care workers and anyone who
spends time supervising children. This course teaches basic
primary and secondary care for injured or ill children
and infants. It may be conducted as a stand-alone course
or may be integrated with the Primary Care (CPR) and
Secondary Care (First Aid) courses to prepare participants
to assist people of all ages.

EFR Instructor Manual – Print and Digital Versions

The Emergency First Response Instructor Manual is updated with revised Primary and Secondary
Care, CPR & AED, and Care for Children instructor guides.
This manual is available in two versions, print and digital. The printed manual (Product No.
71049) replaces the previous version of the manual, and comes with a three-ring-binder to allow
the pages to lay flat for teaching convenience.
The digital version of the manual is new this year (Product No. 72010), and offers a key word/
phrase search function.

EFR Instructor Trainer Guide

The EFR Instructor Trainer Guide and Lesson Guides
are updated to reflect all the changes made to the
recently revised EFR courses. Since the CPR & AED
course materials are now universal, it has formally
become a part of the instructor course curriculum.
The basic structure of the instructor course has not
changed; simply modernized. The nine course pre-
sentations with the optional Mannequin Cleaning
Workshop remain.
