Experiment # 4

Objection:

To determine the kinetics parameters (n, k) by using fractional life method.

Apparatus:
 Batch reactor
 Conductivity cell
Chemicals required:
 Sodium Hydroxide
 Ethyl Acetate
 Distilled water
Chemical Reaction:
Na-OH + CH3COOC2H5 CH3COONa + C2H5OH
Introduction:
Fractional Life Method(tf ) :

The half-life method can be extended to any fractional life method in which the
concentration of reactant drops to any fractional value F= CA in time tf . The
CA 0
derivation is a direct extension of the half-life method giving;

Thus, a plot of log tf versus log CA0 , will give the reaction order.

Graph:

Procedure:
 Firstly set the rpm of peristaltic pump at 14.
 Make up 1L solution of 0.2M, 0.5M, 1.0M, 1.5M, 2.0M of sodium hydroxide and
ethyl acetate for different runs.
 Switch ON the main power supply on the main switch of batch reactor.
 Set the temperature controller at 25oC.
 Charge the reactor with 0.5L of both reactant solution.
 Adjust the conductivity meter probe inside the reactor and switch it ON for taking
the
reading of conductivity.
 Switch ON the reactor agitator and also adjust its rpm, note down the results when
concentration of reactant drops to any fractional value in time tF
 Switch OFF the main power supply of the reactor and wash it off with distilled
water.
Calculations:

Conclusions:
By performing this experiment we are able to configure about the fractional life
methods for the analysis of data for a given reaction of Na-OH with Ethyl acetate.
And able to find out its slope with the help of straight line equations from its graph.
