Recommended Anesthetic Agents: Rabbits

Rabbits Name / Dose Route Needle Gauge

20 - 25 G IV
IV Induction: Ketamine (5 mg/kg) / Diazepam (0.25 mg/kg) IV
Catheter

Telazol (3-4 mg/kg) / Xylazine (4-5 mg/kg)


NOTE : Give Xylazine first to allow sedation followed by SC / IM ≤ 22
Telazol in 2-5 minutes.

Ketamine (35-40 mg/kg) / Xylazine (3-5 mg/kg)


NOTE : Give Xylazine first to allow sedation followed by SC / IM ≤ 22
Ketamine in 2-5 minutes.

Isoflurane: Induction chamber or face mask (3.5 - 4.5%)


Maintenance via face mask or intubation (1.5 - 3%)
Inhalation via precision vaporizer with scavenger system NA
Define delivery gas, e.g., 100% O2
NOTE : Rabbits should be intubated if anesthetized >1hr.

Sevoflurane: Induction chamber or face mask (4.5 - 7%)


Maintenance via face mask (3 - 4.5%), less if intubated.
Inhalation via precision vaporizer with scavenger system NA
Define delivery gas, e.g., 100% O2
NOTE : Rabbits should be intubated if anesthetized >1hr.

Propofol (8-14 mg/kg) - suitable for minimally invasive


procedures (< 6 min). Give 1/2 dose and monitor for 10-
20 sec to evaluate effect prior to administering 1/4 dose, IV ≤ 22
evaluate again before adminstering rest of dose (excessive
dose can cause apnea) .

Propofol induction and continued ansthesia: Induce with


IV (induce) < 22
Propofol (1.5-2 mg/kg) IV with maintenance CRI at
IV Catheter (maintenance CRI) IV Catheter
(1 mg/kg/min) via IV catheter.
