The Saros number of the Cycle. These numbers are the standard ones used in
astronomy. For solar eclipses, the Modified Saros # used by astrologers is included.
The date and zodiac position of the First Eclipse in the cycle.
The date and zodiac position of the Last Eclipse in the cycle.
The Saros numbers for solar and lunar eclipses are totally unrelated. When looking
up a Saros in these tables, make sure you are referring to the right kind of eclipse.
Modified Saros numbers (the kind in astrology books) are abbreviated as "1N" for "1
North" and "5S" for "5 South". If there are two cycles active with the same number,
the words "Old" or "New" are added to designate the older or younger of the two
cycles, e.g. -- "9N Old" and "9N New".
All dates are Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in year-month-day format (yyyy-mm-
dd). For dates since 1582-10-15, the modern Gregorian calendar is used. For dates
before 1582-10-4, however, the older Julian calendar is in effect. When the
calendar was amended in 1582, the days October 5 to October 14 were omitted.
Zodiac positions are in degree-sign-minute format. The positions of eclipses from
3000 AD onward are only estimates rounded to the nearest degree (hence the
question marks). My astrology programs stop at 3000 AD, unfortunately.
The information in these tables was compiled from the sources mentioned in the Eclipse
Bibliography. My thanks to their authors and publishers for supplying such useful
information.
