The Order of Marriage

   The priest, in the presence of the witnesses, begins by putting the following question first
to the bridegroom, who stands at the right side of the bride, and then to the woman,
addressing each by name.
   Damian, vis accipere Joyce, hic    Damian, wilt thou take Joyce,
praesentem in tuam legitimam here present, for thy lawful wife,
uxorem iuxta ritum sanctae matris according to the rite of our holy
Ecclesia? Mother the Church?
R. Volo. R.: I will.

   Then the priest asks the bride:


   Joyce, vis accipere Damian hic    Joyce, wilt thou take Damian,
praesentem in tuum legitimum here present, for thy lawful
maritum iuxta ritum sanctae matris husband, according to the rite of
Ecclesiae? our holy Mother the Church?
R. Volo. R.: I will.

   Having obtained their mutual consent, the priest bids the man and the woman join their
right hands. Then they pledge themselves each to the other as follows, repeating the words
after the priest.
   The man says:
   I, Damian, take thee, Joyce, for my lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day
forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until
death do us part; and thereto I plight thee my troth.
   Then the woman says:
   I, Joyce, take thee, Damian, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this
day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health,
until death do us part; and thereto I plight thee my troth.

   The priest then says:


   Ego conjugo vos in    I join you together in marriage,
matrimonium, in nomine Patris, † in the Name of the Father, † and
et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
R. Amen. R. Amen.

   He sprinkles them with holy water. This done, he blesses the ring, saying:
V. Adjutorium nostrum in nomine V. Our help is in the Name of the
Domini. Lord.
R. Qui fecit caelum et terram. R. Who made heaven and earth.
V. Domine, exaudi orationem
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat. R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

V. Dominus vobiscum. V. The Lord be with you.

R. Et cum spiritu tuo. R. And with Thy spirit.


   Oremus. -- Bene † dic, Domine,
   Let us pray -- Bless, † O Lord,
anulum hunc, quem nos in tuo
this ring, which we bless † in Thy
nomine bene † dicimus: ut, quae
name, that she who shall wear it,
eum gstavrit, fidelitatem integram
keeping true faith unto her spouse,
suo sponso tenens, in pace et
may abide in Thy peace and in
voluntate tua permaneat atque in
obedience to Thy will, and ever
mutua caritate semper vivat. Per
live in mutual love. Through
Christum Dominum nostrum. R.
Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
Amen.

   Then the priest sprinkles the ring with holy water in the form of a cross; and the
bridegroom, having received the ring from the hand of the priest, places it on the third
finger of the left hand of the bride, saying:
   With this ring I thee wed; this gold and silver I thee give; with my body I thee worship;
and with all my worldly goods I thee endow.
   The bridegroom places the ring on the thumb of the bride’s left hand, saying:
In the name of the Father
Then on the first finger, saying,
And of the Son;
Then on the second, saying,
And of the Holy Ghost;

And then on the third, saying, Amen; and there leaves the ring.

Then the priest sprinkles the groom’s ring with holy water in the form of a cross, and the bride, having
received the ring from the hand of the priest, places it on the third finger of the left hand of the bridegroom,
saying:

With this ring I thee wed; with my body I thee worship; and with all my worldly goods I thee
endow.

The bride places the ring on the thumb of the bridegroom’s left hand, saying:
In the name of the Father;

Then on the first finger, saying;


And of the Son;

Then on the second, saying;


And of the Holy Ghost;

And then on the third, saying, Amen; and there leaves the ring.

   This done, the priest adds:


V. Confirma hoc, Deus, quod V. Confirm, O God, that which
operatus es in nobis. Thou hast wrought in us.
R. A templo sancto tuo quod est in R. From Thy holy temple, which is
Jerusalem. in Jerusalem.
V. Kyrie eleison. V. Lord, have mercy.

R. Christe eleison. R. Christ, have mercy.

V. Kyrie eleison. V. Lord, have mercy.

   Pater noster (secreto)    Our Father (inaudibly)


V. Et ne nos inducas in V. And lead us not into
tentationem. temptation.
R. Sed libera nos a malo. R. But deliver us from evil.

V. Salvos fac servos tuos. V. Save Thy servants.

R. Deus meus, sperantes in te. R. Who hope in Thee, O my God.


V. Mitte eis, Domine, auxilium de V. Send them help, O Lord, from
sancto. Thy holy place.
R. Et de Sion tuere eos. R. And defend them out of Sion.
V. Esto eis, Domine, turris V. Be unto them, Lord, a tower of
fortitudinis. strength.
R. A facie inimici. R. From the face of the enemy.

   Let us pray.--Look down with
   Oremus. -- Respice, quaesumus, favor, O Lord, we beseech Thee,
Domine, super hos famulos tuos: upon these Thy servants, and
et institutionis tuis, quibus graciously protect this, Thine
propagationem humani generis ordinance, whereby Thou hast
ordinasti, benignus assiste; ut qui provided for the propagation of
te auctore iunguntur, te auxiliante mankind; that they who are joined
serventur. Per Christum Dominum together by Thy authority may be
nostrum. R. Amen. preserved by Thy help; through
Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

   Then, if the Nuptial Blessing is to be given, the Mass for the Bridegroom and Bride
follows.

THE "VIDI AQUAM"

In High Masses

While the priest sprinkles holy water before solemn Mass on Sundays, the following anthem is
sung:
   Vidi aquam egredientem de    I saw water flowing from the
templo a latare dextro, alleluia: right side of the temple, alleluia;
et omnes ad quos pervenit aqua and all they to whom that water
ista salvi facti sunt et dicent: came were saved; and they shall
alleluia, alleluia. say: alleluia, alleluia.
Ps. Confitemini Domino, Ps. Praise the Lord, because He
quoniam bonus: quoniam in is good; because His mercy
saeculum misericordia eius. endureth forever.
V.: Glory be to the Father, and to
V.: Gloria Patri, et Filio, et
the Son, and to the Holy Ghost . .
Spiritui Sancto . . .

I. MASS OF THE CATECHUMENS


   [The priest prepares for the great Sacrifice by prayers,
sacred songs and readings from Holy Scripture.]

A. PREPARATORY PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR


[Prayers of humility, love, desire, contrition, and confidence.]

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS


   [During Mass, the priest makes 52 times the Sign of the Cross, the summary and emblem of
the bloody Sacrifice of the Cross, which the Mass represents and renews.]

The priest, bowing down at the foot of the altar, makes the
Sign of the Cross, from his forehead to his breast, and says:
   In nomine Patris, et Filii, † et    In the Name of the Father,
Spiritus Sancti. Amen. and of the Son, † and of the
Holy Ghost. Amen.
Then joining his hands before his breast, he begins the Anthem:
Sacerdos. Introibo ad altare Priest. I will go in unto the
Dei. altar of God.
Minister. Ad Deum qui Server. To God who giveth joy
laetificat iuventutem meam. to my youth.
 
THE PSALM 42 -- IUDICA ME
   [The priest alternates with the server in reciting this psalm to express his desire, joy and
confidence in going to the altar of the Sacrifice.]

S. Iudica me, Deus, et discerne P. Judge me, O God, and


causam meam de gente non distinguish my cause from the
sancta: ab homine iniquo, et nation which is not holy:
doloso erue me. deliver me from the unjust and
deceitful man.
M. Quia tu es Deus fortitudo S. For Thou, O God, art my
mea: quare me repulisti, et strength: why hast Thou cast
quare tristis incedo, dum me off? and why go I sorrowful
affligit me inimicus? whilst the enemy afflicteth me?
S. Emitte lucem tuam, et P. Send forth Thy light and
veritatem tuam: ipsa me Thy truth: they have conducted
deduxerunt, et adduxerunt in me and brought me unto Thy
montem sanctum tuum et in holy mount, and into Thy
tabernacula tua. tabernacles.

S. Confitebor tibi in cithara, P. To Thee, O God, my God, I

M. Spera in Deo, quoniam S. Hope in God, for I will still
adhuc confitebor illi: salutare give praise to Him: the

and my God.

Spiritui Sancto. to the Son, and to the Holy
Ghost.
M. Sicut erat in principio, et S. As it was in the beginning, is
nunc, et semper: et in saecula now, and ever shall be, world

The priest repeats the Anthem:
S. Introibo ad altare Dei. P. I will go in unto the altar of
God.
M. Ad Deum qui laetificat S. To God who giveth joy to
iuventutem meam. my youth.
The priest, signing himself with the Sign of the Cross, says:
S. Adiutorum nostrum † in P. Our help † is in the Name of
nomine Domini. the Lord.
M. Qui fecit coelum et terram. S. Who made heaven and earth.
 
THE PUBLIC CONFESSION
   [It is an acknowledgement of his guilt before God and that of all others assisting at the divine
Sacrifice.]

Then, joining his hands, and humby bowing down, he says the Confiteor:
S. Confiteor Deo . . . P. I confess to almighty God, . .
.
M. Misereatur tui omnipotens S. May almighty God be
Deus, et dimissis peccatis tuis, merciful to thee, and forgiving
perducat te ad vitam aeternam. thy sins, bring thee to
everlasting life.
The priest answers: Amen.

The server says the Confiteor.


    Confiteor Deo omnipotenti,    I confess to almighty God, to
beatae Mariae semper Virgini, the blessed Mary ever Virgin,
beato Michaeli Archangelo, blessed Michael the Archangel,
beato Ioanni Baptistae, sanctis blessed John the Baptist, the
Apostolis Petro et Paulo, holy Apostles Peter and Paul,
omnibus Sanctis, et tibi Pater: to all the Saints, and to you,
quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, Father, that I have sinned
verbo, et opere: exceedingly in thought, word,
and deed,
Here he strikes his breast thrice.
    mea culpa, mea culpa, mea    through my fault, through my
maxima culpa. Ideo precor fault, through my most
beatam Mariam semper grievous fault. Therefore I
Virginem, beatum Michaelum beseech the blessed Mary, ever
Archangelum, beatum Ioannem Virgin, blessed Michael the
Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Archangel, blessed John the
Petrum et Paulum, omnes Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter
Sanctos, et te Pater, orare pro and Paul, all the Saints, and
me ad Dominum Deum you, Father, to pray to the Lord
nostrum. our God for me.
Then the priest, with his hands joined, says:
S. Indulgentiam, † P. May the † almighty and
absolutionem, et remissionem merciful Lord grant us pardon,
peccatorum nostrorum, tribuat absolution, and remission of
nobis omnipotens et misericors our sins.

M. Amen. S. Amen.
Bowing down, he proceeds:
S. Deus, tu conversus P. O God, Thou wilt turn again
vivificabis nos. and quicken us.
M. Et plebs tua laetabitur in te. S. And thy people shall rejoice
in Thee.

misericordiam tuam. mercy.

THE PRIEST ASCENDS THE ALTAR
   [With a prayer for pardon on his lips the priest ascends the altar, which he kisses. He kisses
the altar 9 times during the Mass, begging for the intercession of the Saints whose relics repose
in the altar stone.]

First extending, then joining his hands, the priest says audibly Oremus;
then ascending to the altar, he says secretly:
   Aufer a nobis, quaesumus,    Take away from us our
Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut iniquities, we beseech Thee, O
ad Sancta sanctorum puris Lord, that we may be worthy to
mereamur mentibus introire. enter with pure minds into the

His hands joined, and bowing down over the altar, the priest says:
   Oramus te, Domine, per    We beseech Thee, O Lord, by

   [In Solemn Masses the altar is here incensed. Whilst blessing the incense the priest says:]
   Ab illo † benedicaris, in cuius    Be blessed † by Him in whose
honore cremaberis. Amen. honor thou art burnt. Amen.

The priest, signing himself with the Sign of the Cross, reads the Introit of the day.

Then, joining his hands, he says alternately with the ministers:

   [The little ceremony of the Dominus vobiscum, repeated several times during the Mass,
shows how intimately the priest andfaithful should be united in offering the Sacrifice.]
 
THE COLLECTS

   [The Collects mean the collected prayers of all the faithful assisting at the Holy Sacrifice.
Raising his voice, his hands, and his sentiments to God, the priest excites the faithful to unite
their prayers with his.]

Grant, we beseech, O almighty God, that the


Præsta, quæsumus omnípotens Deus: ut splendor of Thy brightness may shine upon
claritátis tuæ super nos splendor effúlgeat; et us, and that the light of Thy light may
lux tuæ lucis corda eórum, qui per grátiam strengthen with the enlightenment of the Holy

   [The Missal is transferred to the other side of the altar to symbolize that the divine favor was
taken away from the unfaithful Jews and given to the Gentiles.]

In Solemn Masses the priest blesses the incense, and the deacon,
kneeling before the altar with his hands joined, says:

Clease my heart and my lips, O almighty


Munda cor meum ac labia mea, omnipotens God, who didst cleanse the lips of the prophet
Deus, qui labia Isaiae prophetae calculo Isaias with a burning coal, and vouchsafe,
through Thy gracious mercy, so to purify me,
mundasti ignito: ita me tua grata miseratione that I may worthily announce Thy holy
dignare mundare ut sanctum Evangelium Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Afterwards he takes the book from the altar, and again kneeling down
before the priest, asks his blessing, saying:
   Iube domne benedicere.    Sir, give me thy blessing.
The priest answers:
   The Lord be in thy heart and
   Dominus sit in corde tuo, et
on thy lips, that thou mayest
in labiis tuis: ut digne et
worthily and in a becoming

Then, turning back to towards the book, with his hands joined, the
priest -- at Solemn Masses the deacon -- says:

THE GOSPEL
John 15. 26, 27; 16: 1-4

   [The Gospel is a selection drawn from one of the gospels of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, or
John. The Gospel is the most solemn of the readings at the Mass, because it tells a story of our
Savior Jesus Christ, whose words and deeds it recalls. 

  The faithful rise and remain standing during the Gospel. At the beginning they make the Sign
of the Cross upon the forehead, lips and heart to declare that they will never be ashamed of the
word of God, that they are ready to confess it by word of mouth, and that they love it with all
their heart.]

And while saying:

The priest signs the Book, and himself on the
forehead, mouth, and breast; the server says:

The priest kisses the Gospel, and says:
S. Per evangelica dicta deleantur P. By the words of the Gospel
nostra delicta. may our sins be blotted out.
 
[At Solemn Masses he is then incensed by the deacon.]

   [This is the most important part of the Mass. Those
who do not assist at it entirely do not hear Mass.]

The priest kisses the altar, and turning to the people says:

Making the Sign of the Cross with the paten, he places the host
upon the corporal. He pours wine and water into the chalice,
blessing the water before it is mixed.

   [He pours a few drops of water into the chalice containing wine, in remembrance of the water
and blood which flowed from the side of Jesus when pierced by the soldier's lance.]
   Deus, † qui humanae    O God, † who, in creating
substantiae dignitatem human nature, didst wonderfully

Then the priest takes the chalice, and offers it, saying:
   Offerimus tibi, Domine,    We offer unto Thee, O Lord,
calicem salutaris, tuam the chalice of salvation,
deprecantes clementiam: ut in beseeching Thy clemency, that it
conspectu divinae maiestatis may ascend before Thy divine
tuae, pro nostra et totius mundi Majesty, as a sweet savor, for
salute cum odore suavitatis our salvation, and for that of the

The priest makes the Sign of the Cross with the chalice, places it
upon the corporal, and covers it with the pall. Then, with his hands
joined upon the Altar, and slightly bowing down, he says:
   Accept us, O Lord, in the spirit
   In spiritu humilitatis, et in

animo contrito suscipiamur a te,
heart, and grant that the sacrifice

Raising his eyes towards heaven, extending and then joining his hands,
the priest makes the Sign of the Cross over the host and the chalice,
while he invokes the Holy Spirit.

THE INCENSING OF THE OFFERINGS AT HIGH MASS


   [What is offered unto the living God: 1) Bread; 2) Wine; 3) We ourselves -- all the faithful.
Hence this threefold gift unto God is incensed because all the faithful, through this offertorial act,
have become holy unto God.]

At Solemn Masses, the priest now blesses incense,


saying the following prayers:

Receiving the thurible from the deacon, the priest incenses

Then he incenses the altar, saying:

Giving the censor to the deacon, he says:

The priest is then incensed by the deacon, who then incenses the others in order.

 
THE WASHING OF THE HANDS
   [The priest washes his fingers to symbolize the great purity and inner cleanliness of those who
offer or participate in this great Sacrifice.]

   [The priest begins the preface, a call to render thanks to God the Father, through Jesus Christ,
in union with all the heavenly spirits. The prayer of thanksgiving and praise varies with inportant
Feasts. There are at the present time 15 different prefaces which are given in the Ordinary of the
Mass.]

The priest begins the Preface, holding his hands over the altar:

He raises them a little when he says:

   [The word Canon is derived from the Greek, and signifies: Rule, direction, order. The Canon

After pronouncing the words of the Consecration,
the priest, kneeling, adores the Sacred Host; rising, he elevates It.

corporal, again adores It. After this he never disjoins his fingers
and thumbs, except when he is to take the Host, until after the washing
of his fingers.

Consecration of the Wine


Then, uncovering the chalice, the priest says:

After the elevation of the Chalice, the priest says in a low voice:

prayer the Sacred Host is divided to symbolize the immolation of the Victim, the separation of
the Body and Soul of Jesus when He died upon Calvary.]
Then the priest takes the paten between the first

He puts the Part which is in his right hand upon
the paten, and breaks a Paricle from the other

He places the Half which is in his left hand
on the paten, and holding the Particle which he broke

THE MIXTURE OF THE BODY AND BLOOD
[This was the mixture which was formerly received.]

The priest makes the Sign of the Cross with the Particle over the Chalice, saying:

M. Et cum spiritu tuo. S. And with thy spirit.
He puts the Particle into the Chalice, saying:
   Haec commixtio, et consecratio    May this mixture and consecration

THE AGNUS DEI
   [The priest repeats the words of St. John the Baptist, who proclaimed to the Jews the Messias.]

He covers the Chalice, genuflects and rises; than bowing down


and striking his breast thrice, he says:

THE PRAYERS AT THE COMMUNION
a) Communion of the Priest
Communion of the Body

The priest genuflects, rises and says:


   I will take the Bread of heaven,
   Panem coelestem accipiam, et
and will call upon the Name of
nomen Domini invocabo.

   [He then repeats the words of the Centurion whose humble prayer obtained the healing of his
servant.]

Slightly inclining, he takes both halves of the Host between


the thumb and forefinger of his left hand, and the
paten between the same forefinger and the middle one;
then striking his breast with his right hand, and raising
his voice a little, he says three times devoutly and humbly:
   Domine, non sum dignus, ut    Lord, I am not worthy that
intres sub tectum meum: sed Thou shouldst enter under my
tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur roof; say but the word, and my
anima mea.5 soul shall be healed.5
Then with his right hand, making the Sign of the
Cross with the Host over the paten, he says:
   Corpus Domini nostri Iesu    The Body of our Lord Jesus
Christi custodiat animam meam Christ preserve my soul unto life
in vitam aeternam. Amen. everlasting. Amen.
He then reverently receives both halves of the Host,
joins his hands, and meditates a short time.

Communion of the Blood

Then he uncovers the Chalice, genuflects, collects whatever


fragments may remain on the corporal, and purifies the paten
over the Chalice, saying:
   What return shall I make to the
   Quid retribuam Domino pro
Lord for all He has given to me?
omnibus quae retribuit mihi?
I will take the chalice of
Calicem salutaris accipiam, et
salvation, and call upon the
nomen Domini invocabo.
Name of the Lord. Praising I will

The priest takes the Chalice and making the Sign
of the Cross with it, says:

Then he receives all the Precious Blood, together
with the Particle.
 
b) Communion of the Faithful

If Holy Communion is to be distributed, the server says


the Confiteor. [This was omitted in the 1962 Missal.]

beatae Mariae semper Virgini, the blessed Mary ever Virgin,
beato Michaeli Archangelo, blessed Michael the Archangel,

omnibus Sanctis, et tibi Pater: the Saints, and to you, Father,
quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, that I have sinned exceedingly in

maxima culpa. Ideo precor fault, through my most grievous
beatam Mariam semper fault. Therefore I beseech the

After which the priest communicates those who are to
communicate, if there be any, saying:

Making the Sign of the Cross, he continues:

Elevating a particle of the Blessed Sacrament and turning
towards the people, he says:
   Behold the Lamb of God,

THE PRAYERS DURING THE ABLUTION
   [After the Communion ceremony the priest makes two ablutions (washings) of the Chalice.]

The priest says silently:


   Quod ore sumpserimus,    Grant, O Lord, that what we
have taken with our mouth, we
Domine, pura mente capiamus:
may receive with a pure mind;
et de munere temporali fiat nobis
and from a temporal gift may it
remedium sempiternum.
become to us an eternal remedy.
Then he holds out the Chalice to the server -- in Solemn Masses to the deacon -- who pours
wine into it for the first ablution, then the priest proceeds:
   May Thy Body, O Lord, which
   Corpus tuum, Domine, quod
I have received, and Thy Blood
sumpsi, et Sanguis, quem potavi,
which I have drunk, cleave to my
adhaereat visceribus meis: et
bowels; and grant that no stain of
praesta; ut in me non remaneat
sin may remain in me, who have
scelerum macula, quem pura et
been fed with this pure and holy
sancta refecerunt sacramenta:
Sacrament; Who livest and
Qui vivis et regnas in saecula
reignest for ever and ever.

The priest then washes his fingers and receives the second
ablution. Then he covers the chalice and folding the corporal,
places it on the chalice, as at the beginning of Mass,
and goes to the right side of the altar
to say the prayers from the Missal.

THE BLESSING
   The priest, making a profound reverence, again asks the Blessed Trinity graciously to accept
this Holy Sacrifice.]

Bowing down before the altar, with hands joined upon it, he says:
   May the performance of my
   Placeat tibi, sancta Trinitas, homage be pleasing to Thee, O
obsequium servitutis meae: et holy Trinity: and grant that the
praesta: ut sacrificium, quod Sacrifice which I, though
oculis tuae maiestatis indignus unworthy, have offered up in the
obtulit, tibi sit acceptabile, sight of Thy Majesty, may be
mihique et omnibus, pro quibus acceptable to Thee, and through
illud obtuli, sit, te miserante, Thy mercy, be a propitiation for
propitiabile. Per Christum me, and for all those for whom I
Dominum nostrum. Amen. have offered it. Through Christ
our Lord. Amen.
   [Then he turns to the faithful, invoking upon them the blessing of God and making over them
the Sign of the Cross.]

He kisses the altar, and raising his eyes, extending, raising


and joining his hands, he bows down his head and says:
S. Benedicat vos omnipotens P. May almighty God the Father,
Deus, Pater, et Filius, † et Son, † and Holy Ghost, bless
Spiritus Sanctus. you.

THE LAST GOSPEL
   [The beginning of the Gospel of Saint John, which retraces the Incarnation of the Son of God,
is read from the card at the altar. If the book is used, a different gospel is read.
   At the end, the server answers "Deo gratias." It is eminently proper that the last word of the
Mass should be one of thanksgiving.]

Then turning to the Gospel side of the altar, the priest says:
