Dear Fellow Educator,

It is with extreme pleasure that I highly recommend Amelia Cowan for a teaching position at your institution.
Amelia has been my intern for the entire 2020-21 school year. She currently teaches three sections of Spanish 1 for
8th graders, a class for which students receive high school credit upon passing. She began the school year by
observing the routines of our virtual classes, then took on planning. She has very effectively executed this endeavor,
including grading, recording grades electronically, and planning and evaluating all activities and assessments in
these classes, in addition to learning the logistics of using the Schoology Learning Management System. Since
Scarlett Middle School is also an International Baccalaureate World School, she also has experience successfully
using the components of the IB Framework, such as using statements of inquiry, inquiry questions, criteria
assessments and rubrics, and Approaches to Learning.

In addition to having knowledge of the Spanish language and diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world,
Amelia is also sincere, meticulously hard-working, reflective and a person who shows genuine care and concern for
her students and their growth. Most notably, Amelia has taken many actions to get to know her students on a
personal level which is a challenge given that we have been working entirely virtually this school year. She has
created files with pictures of the students that they have shared or are part of our school database and adds
information about their interests by both having personal meetings with each student in breakout rooms, or by
viewing assignments such as introductory slides and videos they have made about themselves. In addition she has
been able to use interest surveys we gave students at the beginning of the school year to add information and visuals
to our lessons that connect to them personally. Before teaching a lesson, she considers how students might
emotionally react to the information presented and is very patient, considerate, and encouraging. At the same time,
Amelia always maintains a level of professionalism with students that makes clear her role as a mentor and
facilitator.

Also notable is Amelia’s level of creativity, organization, and adaptability. In her time teaching Scarlett students,
she has been excited to create organized methods of giving them personal feedback on their work, particularly
criteria assessments. She has also been willing to recreate materials so that they are easier for the students to follow
to go along with the Universal Design for Learning slides that we consistently use with students in teaching
virtually. She has enjoyed her work so much that she really would like to continue working with an IB school. I am
certain any school community would consider Amelia a huge asset to their team. With her strong work ethic,
attention to details, pride in her work, and willingness to always learn and adapt, Amelia definitely has a bright
future ahead of her in teaching. Any student would be lucky to have her. If you have any questions, please feel free
to call me at 734-834-1657.

Sincerely,

Laura Hovey Ozuna
