Topic: Meme Issue on art appreciation: Some people consider memes as
forms of digital art while others find it merely entertaining.
Read: The article contains information about the topic and the issue on art appreciation. Answer each
question in a maximum of 5 sentences only. You may write your answers in Filipino or English. Each question
is 10 points.
Place your meme here:

1. Memes: are they art or non-art? (Choose one only, avoid answering “it can be both”.) Cite one detail from
the reading material to support your answer.

Based on my learning in our previous readings including the recent one, I believe that memes are not just
merely for entertainment but rather considered as art because just like art, people can express their ideas in a
creative way and showing off the message to others to either inspire, entertain or to give knowledge through
making memes. According to the recent reading, Dawkins defined memes as a conveyance of ideas of a unit
of cultural transmission or a unit of imitation. To support Dawkins’s definition, we all know that most of the
memes are almost the same and they just differ on how the creator of the meme would like to interpret the
imitated meme by editing or innovating it. Moreover, as the time goes by, memes are now becoming a valid
way to show one’s artistic expression and influence people to have a change or effect in culture beyond the
digital world. Different memes we see on social media are not just images to entertain but to hit our
consciousness, help us understand what happens around us and become an eye-opener in the reality of our
culture today.

2. What is the meaning of your meme?

The meme inserted above shows how fast the time flies and how terrifying it is. The idiom “Time flies so fast”
is very popular and almost everyone knows the meaning of it despite its idiomacy but instead of expressing it
in words, the picture itself become a meme by imitating the idiom and making it a hyperbole without saying
the complete thought. In spite of similarities, the meme tells something beyond the idiom mentioned wherein
apart from stating that time passes by so fast, it also tells people that in every second or in every blink of an
eye, many terrifying changes may happen unexpectedly that can affect and change everyone’s future. Same
month but different year was expressed through a blink of an eye because just like what happened to our
country, everything seemed okay last March 2020 but little did many people know especially us, students, that
one day to one-week class suspension will turn into a year and will completely change our lives as a student.
Thus, the meme above only tells us how important the time is and since we never know what the future
awaits us, we should always spend our time wisely to have a memorable one.
