Introductory verbs: say, tell, ask

Tense changes:

 Present Simple- Past Simple


“Mark doesn’t live here anymore” she said.
She said (that) Mark didn’t live there anymore.
 Present Continuous- Past Continuous
“We are going to the cinema” they said.
They said that they were going to the cinema.
 Present Perfect Simple- Past Perfect Simple
“I have never been there before” she told us.
She told us that she had never been there before.
 Past Simple- Past Perfect simple
“I won the match” he said.
He said that he had won the match.
 Past Continuous- Past Perfect Continuous
“Mary was washing the dishes when you called” Tara told Peter.
Tara told Peter that Mary had been washing the dishes when he had called.
 Future –Future in the Past (will-would)
“She will definitely win the competition this year” the coach told the fans.
The coach told the fans that she would definitely win the competition that year.
“We will be travelling to Egypt for the summer holiday” the Smiths’ told their neighbours.
The Smiths’ told their neighbours that they would be travelling to Egypt for the summer holiday.
“She will have spoken to the authorities by the time you get there” they said.
They said that she would have spoken to the authorities by the time I got there.
“Mark will have been working in this office for five years now” he said.
He said that Mark would have been working in that office for five years.
Modals change as follows: Other changes:
Can -> could Here -> there
May -> might Tonight -> that night
Shall -> should Today -> that day
Must -> had to This -> that
These -> those
Now -> then
Yesterday -> the day before
Last night/week/month/year -> the previous night/week/…
Ago -> before

Reporting questions

“Where do you live?” he asked me.

Question word

He asked me where I lived.

Could you tell me…../I would like to know… where you live?

Tenses do not change in Reported Speech when:

 The reporting verb is in the Present, Future and Present Perfect.


 We report general truths and laws of nature
 We report conditionals (type 2, type 3) and wishes.
 We report something immediately after it was said.
