TITLE

An Empirical study on Koothambalams

Abstract

Koothambalam or temple theatre is a closed hall for staging the ancient ritualistic art forms like
Koothu, Nangiar koothu and Koodiyattam. It is both a place within the temple to socialize besides
highlighting the remnants of ancient architectural & cultural heritage and brilliance. Adopted from
the Sanskrit theatre concept of ‘Natya Shastra’ which dates back to 200 CBE, several such temples
and theatres have withstood the test of time even to this day. However, it is to be highlighted that
with the evolution of technology and modern architectural methodologies, several such ancient
traditional practices are lost and not passed on to the later generations.

This dissertation is an attempt to study the traditional architectural practices of few Koothambalams
in Kerala.

Method Outline

The primary focus of this paper will be to list the various architectural practices sought during the
construction of the Koothambalams. The Design aspects such as shape, size, orientation,
proportioning system, position of stag, position of green room etc. Understanding the architectural
similarities of the temple and the performance space or Koothambalam in terms of the {garbha
griha}, {mandapa}, {maha-mandapa} etc. and to understand the Physicality and Spirituality of the
Koothambalam.

Special impetus will be given to the aspects of sustainability, minimal maintenance, social and
scientific significance. Finally, I will try to lay the foundations to highlight the importance to consider
some of its practices even in modern architectural practices.
