Abstract
Typical Assam Type Houses (Ikôra House of erstwhile Assam) has withstood catastrophes of
NE and is a resultant of local design considerations which includes heavy rains, humidity,
loose soil, dense vegetation, earthquakes, cyclones and low economic level. But today this
technique is not the first choice anymore for various reasons. Paper intends to infer attributes
of bygone Assam type houses and find ways to integrate them in contemporary prevalent
construction techniques.
A field study was undertaken to detail out vernacular style for its sustenance and decoding
architectural planning, design, materials used, construction techniques, etc. Various properties
from Guwahati (Assam), Shillong (Meghalaya) and Aizawl (Mizoram) were surveyed,
mapped, measured and documented in detail in a period of 6 months. These properties are still
functional and comfortably housing Families, Govt. offices, Private offices, etc. Concurrently
interviews were also taken of property owners and Civil Engineers from Building Dept. in
North East Council (NEC) and from IIT Guwahati to understand technicalities, etc. Further
field data was analysed and decoded in lab.
Proportion of wooden materials used and segmentation of walling system are the few of many
findings which are crucial about Assam type houses. Apart from these, certain pivotal aspects
(related to sustainability) were also discovered such as being locally dependent, almost zero
waste generation, on-site waste disposal, which have found place in SA methods of GRIHA,
LEED, etc. Amalgamation of old and modern knowledge base may save us from recurring
disasters and that’s why we need to take it forward.

Keywords: Assam Type House, Self-Sustaining, Earthquake Zone 5 Tolerant Structure.
