A Very Wet Town


Cilaos is one of the wettest cities in the world. It is on the French island of Réunion
in the Indian Ocean.
Average Temperatures
The temperatures in Cilaos are from 60 ˚F (16 ˚C) to 77 ˚F (25 ˚C). It is warmest from
January to March. The temperatures are from 72 ˚F (22 ˚C) to 77 ˚F (25 ˚C). The
coldest months are from June to August. The temperatures are still nice, from 60 ˚F
(16 ˚C) to 66 ˚F (19 ˚C).
Seasons
November is the beginning of the rainy season. The wettest months are January and
February. There are about 15 rainy days in January. The average rainfall in January is six
inches (153 mm).
“June is the start of winter here,” says George, “and this is my favorite time of year.”
George is a farmer in Cilaos. He grows fruit. “During the dry winter months, I get the
house ready for the rainy season,” George says.
People in Cilaos enjoy the weather in the dry season. However, in this wet place,
the dry season also has some rain. There are about 14 rainy days in July. The average
rainfall in July is about two inches (57 mm).
