Toyota 1KZ-TE Installation Instructions

Read ALL of these instructions before commencing installation

1 Installing the Interface

1.1 Turn the ignition off (remove the key).
1.2 Locate the Engine Control Unit (ECU) on your vehicle (located behind the glove compartment). Remove
all covers to access the ECU (refer vehicle manual for details)
1.3 Identify which connector your vehicle has on the ECU as shown below.
Early model vehicles usually have connector in figure 2, and later models use the connector in figure 1

Figure 2 – Early Models

1.4 The Diesel Tuning Module should be located close to the ECU, but with sufficient space for the glove
compartment to close. Above the glove compartment top shield is usually suitable. Do not install in
damp area or on the engine
1.5 Connect the two BROWN wires to an earth point close to the ECU. Ensure this is a good earth point.
1.6 Identify the coloured pin numbers in relation to the ECU fitted to your vehicle.
1.7 Determine if the wires are going to be soldered (preferred option) or connected using the supplied
insulation displacement connectors.
1.8 Find the cables referenced (by pin number).
1.9 Use Table 1 for vehicles fitted with the 4 pole connector ECU in figure 1. Use Table 2 for vehicles fitted
with the 3 pole connector ECU in figure 2
1.10 Connect the adaptor loom to the ECU loom. Use the insulation displacement connectors on the vehicle
harness & male spade on the thin wires, or solder the supplied adaptor cable to the ECU wiring loom
neatly corresponding to the appropriate pins – see figure 1 & 2 above and tables 1 & 2 below

NOTE: . We prefer that the connections are soldered for improved connection.
Blue connector should be used on the power (red) connection if crimp on connections are used

1.11 Do not cut the black lead, or its associated brown lead. Check all wires for correct connection
(incorrect connection may damage the module or the ECU).
1.12 Cover the exposed wires individually with electrical tape. Secure the adaptor loom to the ECU loom
using cable ties. Reassemble the connector & connect to the ECU.

2 Re-assembly & Test Drive

2.1 Do not connect the Diesel Tuning Module to the adaptor harness yet!
2.2 Start the engine, and rev the engine. All operations should be unchanged from prior to the above
steps
2.3 Turn OFF the ignition & remove the key
2.4 Connect the Diesel Tuning Module to the adaptor loom, and secure it to the ECU or in the
immediate area. You may wish to reform the loom if you choose an alternative mounting location
for the Diesel Tuning Module.
2.5 Start the engine and cycle the engine revs – there should be no noticeable difference to operations
2.6 Test drive – observe the additional performance when the accelerator is held WOT (wide open
throttle).

3 Operational Use
3.1 For best performance and economy;
• Keep the air filter clean
• Drive smoothly
• Keep the exhaust system free flowing
• Keep tyres inflated appropriately for the load and speed
• Do not lug the engine under load below 2200RPM – downshift a gear
• Use clean moisture free diesel fuel – change filters if the fuel is contaminated
3.2 Diesel Tuning Module must not be exposed to directly to moisture
3.3 Removal of the Diesel Tuning Module alone returns the vehicle to standard performance

4 Other Performance Options

4.1 Performance can be further improved by installation of an ENG-TEK Performance Exhaust System
4.2 Performance can be improved slightly with a sports air filter (check that it provides adequate
filtering if the vehicle is used off road).
4.3 Larger turbocharger for increased boost at high engine speeds
