MS BEM 208 (Environmental Impact Assessment)

You are now in the second year of your course
Master of Science in Biodiversity and Environmental Management.
With the “new normal” we are currently facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SY 2020-2021 will
never be easy for all of us. Our routines are changing as our lives are upheaved by changes
brought by CoVid-19. BUCAF is with you in responding to various academic challenges. Thus,
flexible teaching and learning modalities particularly an online course will be employed for you to
learn while we are waiting that everything will return back to the usual face-to-face conduct of
classes.
For this course, we will be using a variety of platforms as our “virtual classroom”. For the most
part, we will be using Google Classroom. Facebook Groups will also be utilized for back- up.
Materials and announcements will be posted in both to cater to the different connectivity and
accessibility status of everyone in the block. Messenger and Google Meet will also be utilized
minimally for real-time conversation and consultation whenever needed (depending on the

1. Course Introduction
MS BEM 208 is a 3-unit lecture subject course for the Master of Science in Biodiversity and
Environmental Management (MS BEM).
This course discusses the framework and methodology for environmental impact assessment;
socio-economic impact assessment, prediction and assessment of impacts on the physical and
biological environment, environmental management plans, assessment of environmental
resources in terms of their potential utilization and corresponding impact to human activities,
sectoral environmental impact assessment integrated with disaster risk reduction and
remediation.
Course Information
Upon completion of the course MS BEM 208 – the student must be able to:
a. Students will be able to describe the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and its
requirements.
b. Students will become familiar with some of the basic environmental assessment
policies and requirements.
c. Through case studies, students will learn to present and explain the components and
decision-making processes involved in environmental assessment.

The target learners for this course are the MS BEM Graduate Students. This subject does
not have any prerequisite.
4. Mode of Delivery
For this semester, the university identified three (3) types of learners, namely: students with
A. Good internet access (able to participate in synchronous activity);
B. Poor to fair internet access (able to participate in asynchronous activities only); and
C. No internet connection.
Hence, the table below shows the mode of deliveries for each type of learners:

MS BEM 208 is composed 14 lessons. Each lesson has its module with the corresponding
lecture (e-copy, printed copies), learning activities, and self-assessment. You are expected to
finish all 14 lessons within the 18 weeks. The table below shows your weekly activity for the whole
semester; please refer to it every week to ensure you are not missing any activities and deadlines.

The assessment that will be used is categorized into two: formative and summative. For
the formative assessment, you will encounter Self-Assessment quizzes in every lesson module

that are intended to aid you in learning and validate your gained knowledge in each lesson; this
will not be recorded or graded.
To ensure objectivity, rubrics will be used for the evaluation of your outputs whenever
applicable and can be accessed on the course site.
The major output is from the laboratory activities scheduled at the end of the term.
7. Grading System
As indicated in the course syllabus, your course performance will be evaluated based
on the following criteria:
1.0 -- 99 - 100%; 1.1 -- 98%; 1.2 -- 97%; 1.3 -- 96%; 1.4 -- 95% (Outstanding); 1.5 -- 94%;
1.6 -- 93%; 1.7--92% (Superior); 1.8 -- 91%; 1.9 -- 90%; 2.0 -- 89%; 2.1 -- 88%; 2.2 -- 87%;
2.3 -- 86%; 2.4 -- 85% (Very Satisfactory); 2.5 -- 84%; 2.6 -- 82-83%; 2.7 -- 80-81% (Satisfactory);
2.8 -- 78-79%: 2.9 -- 76-77%; 3.0 -- 75% (Fair); 3.1-4.0 CONDITIONAL FAILURE

8. Learning Resources
However, for those students under Type B and C, you are advised to inform me
ahead of time so that the necessary solution may be served at once to avoid problems at
the end of the semester. The learning material is but not limited to the following:
a. Modules
Modules will be prepared per lesson and are uploaded in the course site. Each
module in the manual has its own set of Self-Assessment Tests. You are
required to read all the modules and take the self-assessment tests. You will
also find the activities at the end of each module which you need to accomplish
and submit on the indicated date.
b. Video Lectures/Resources.
Video lectures/resources are additional resources to help you better
understand the topic. They are YouTube videos and the links are provided in
the module and course site sorted per topic. You are not required to watch the
videos; however, it will be a great resource should you access it.
