Yellow
1st in the order of draw
Additive: Sodium polyanetholsulfonate (SPS) prevents the clotting and stabilizes
bacterial growth.
Laboratory Use: Cultures on blood or body fluid.
Inversions: 8-10

Light Blue
2nd in the order of draw.
Additive: Sodium Citrate, removes calcium to prevent clotting.
Laboratory Use: Coagulation tests such as PT/INR and PTT
Inversions: 3-4

Red
3rd in the order of draw.
Additive: None
Laboratory Use: Serum testing, serology, blood bank, blood chemistry.
Inversions: 0-5

Red Marbled
4th in the order of draw.
Additive: Silica, present to enhance clotting.
Laboratory Use: Serum testing.
Inversions: 5

Green
5th in the order of draw.
Additive: Standard heparin (sodium/lithium/ammonium) prevents thrombin formation.
Laboratory Use: Blood chemistry such as whole blood tests and plasma testing.
Inversions: 8-10

Light Green
6th in the order of draw.
Additive: Lithium heparin and gel aid in plasma separation.
Laboratory Use: Plasma determination in chemistry tests.
Inversions: 8-10

Lavender
7th in the order of draw.
Additive: Ethylenediaminetetracetic acid (EDTA) removes calcium to prevent
clotting.
Laboratory Use:Hematology such as CBC or glycosylated hemoglobin.
Inversions: 8-10

Pink
8th in the order of draw.
Additive: Sodium heparin (may also be referred to as sodium EDTA) prevents
thrombin formation and prevents clotting.
Laboratory Use: Chemistry for trace elements.
Inversions: 8-10

White
8th in the order of draw.
Additive: Sodium heparin (may also be referred to as sodium EDTA) prevents
thrombin formation and prevents clotting.
Laboratory Use: Chemistry for trace elements.

Royal Blue
8th in the order of draw.
Additive: Sodium heparin (may also be referred to as sodium EDTA) prevents
thrombin formation and prevents clotting.
Laboratory Use: Chemistry for trace elements.

Gray
9th in the order of draw.
Additive: Potassium oxalate and sodium flouride to inhibit glycolysis (the
chemical reaction of converting glucose into pyruvate) and removes calcium to
prevent clotting.
Laboratory Use: Glucose tolerance tests and alcohol levels, chemistry tests.
Inversions: 8-10

Dark Blue
10th in the order of draw.
Additive: Tube contains fibrin degradation product.
Laboratory Use: Detects if the patient has had a recent breakdown of clots, which
may indicate several conditions such as blood clots in the legs (DVT), hepatic
vein obstruction, pulmonary embolus or stroke.
Inversions: 8-10
