Simple adjectives are one-word adjectives ( ex: large, long, beautiful, interesting…)

Compound adjectives are two-word adjectives: Word + hyphen(-) + word

1. Number + hyphen +singular noun

 There are three bed rooms in her house ( a three – bedroom house)
 The holiday lasted ten days ( a ten – day holiday)
 She received coins worth five pounds ( five – pound coins)
 The boy is nine years old ( a nine – year old boy)

Adjective + hyphen + noun + ed

 I wear a shirt with short sleeves. ( a short – sleeved shirt)


 This tennis player uses his left hand when he plays. ( a left – handed tennis player)
 My sister has got a blond hair. (a blond – haired sister)

3.
Adjective + hyphen + gerund (verb+ing)

 My parents aren’t strict. They’re friendly and easy – going.


 The meeting lasted very long. ( a long – lasting meeting)
 This man looks nice. ( a nice – looking man)

4. Adverb + hyphen + past participle

Regular ( visited / raised / presented…)

The past participle can be irregular ( done / known / written…)

 They rarely visit their mother. (a rarely – visited mother)


 She raised her child badly. ( a badly – raised child)
 We know well this actor. He’s very famous. ( a well – known actor)
 He wrote the letter nicely. ( a nicely – written letter)
