REPORT OF VISIT TO JUVENILE CORRECTION HOME, GAUTAM

BUDH NAGAR ON WEDNESDAY, 14TH NOVEMBER 2018

About Legal Aid Cell, Lloyd Law College

The Lloyd Law College Legal Aid & Services Clinic is the body, which inducts students to
use their knowledge of law to provide free legal aid to those who are needy through various
media. The Legal Aid functions that are performed by it include preventive, remedial, activist
and reformative measures.
Our aim is to spread legal awareness among students and people at large. We endeavor to
achieve the target by organizing legal literacy camps, Seminars, Legal Counseling, public
Speaking, Poster Making, Street Plays, liaising with Legal Services Authorities, Jail Visits
and through various other communicable medium.

INTRODUCTION

A significant part of the jail population in the country consists of under trials prisoners and
prisoners who are in jail due to non-payment of a meager amount owing to their financial
incapacities, which has been awarded by the court as punishment and fines and those inmates
whose trials are yet to be initiated. Thus, access legal aid as well as financial support is
essential for providing justice to these inmates.

On the question of inequality in the administration of justice, Justice P.N. Bhagwati, speaking
through the Legal Aid Committee in 1971 had famously observed, “Legal aid means
providing an arrangement in the society so that the mission of administration of justice
becomes easily accessible and is not out of reach of those who have to resort to it for
enforcement… the poor and illiterate should be able to approach the courts, and their
ignorance and poverty should not be an impediment in the way of their obtaining justice
from the courts. Legal aid should be available to the poor and illiterate, who don’t have
access to courts. One need not be a litigant to seek aid by means of legal aid.”

REPORT

Members of Legal Aid cell of Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida got an opportunity to visit
Gautam Budh Nagar Juvenile Correction Home, Greater Noida on Wednesday, November
14, 2018. This visit gave us immense opportunity to our students to interact with the children
who have committed crime or by some other reasons are send to the juvenile correction home
and to examine every part of the juvenile correction home. As per the report of Govt. of Uttar
Pradesh, the purpose of the correction homes for juvenile is to separate criminals from the
society in which they would operate. Corrections operate as part of the criminal-justice
system, providing housing and programs for offenders who have been convicted of crimes
that necessitate the loss of freedom for the offender. Incarceration is the most serious
punishment (short of loss of life) to which a free society can condemn an individual.

After discussion with the Ms. Neelu Menwal, Secretary, DALSA, Gautam Budh Nagar/ Civil
Judge Senior Division, Gautam Budh Nagar Lloyd Law College organized a drawing
competition for the children who were in the correction home. After knowing this, members
of our committee asked the authorities present in the correction home to bring the children in
one common hall where this competition was to be organized. The children in the correction
home took active participation in the same and they were enthusiast for the competition. The
members of our committee including the faculty and the students then distributed sheets of
paper and other essentials for the competition. Our committee member then asked the
authorities that why these children are kept here then for this reason behind the authorities
replied they have committed crime like theft, murder, rape, etc. Further our committee
member interacted with one of the child who had committed the offence of rape and he had
confessed the same due to this he had been awarded the punishment in the correction home.
The authorities have also added up that some of them who were present there were wrongly
accused. Taking this into consideration faculty in-charge of the Legal Aid Committee
discussed the same situation with the management of the Lloyd Law College and requested
them to give awards in kind to the top 5 winners of the competition. The management agreed
on the same and allotted the fund for this noble cause.

Keeping the concept of Pollution free environment in mind Legal Aid Clinic of Lloyd Law
College made their efforts to help the children to develop their skills and think about their life
and the environment so, that these inmates have better life and bright future after the time
they are out from the correction home.

Pollution today is pervasive and persistent. While the world has achieved significant
economic growth over the past few decades, it has been accompanied by large amounts of
pollution, with significant impacts on human health and ecosystems and the ways in which
some of the major Earth system processes, such as the climate, are functioning.
Environmental Pollution comes in various forms of air pollution, water pollution, soil
Pollution etc. Environmental protection means caring for our resources and subsequently for
ourselves. Use Eco-Friendly Products, which makes our environment safe. It helps to prevent
health issues by protecting environment. Everyone should avoid plastic products and make
use these Eco-Friendly Products in everyday life. Environment plays a great role in health
condition. Peoples living in bad environmental conditions are more prone to illness and
diseases than the peoples living in clean areas.

Lloyd Law College had organized a drawing competition on the topic of “Pollution free
environment” on the occasion of Children’s Day in the Juvenile Correction Home, Gautam
