OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this study is to determine the potential of the combination of eggshell powder ESP and
expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) in concrete mixture cement in a brick production to produce a good
cementations material. Specifically, this study aimed to;

 To determine the effect of eggshell powder ESP and expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) on the other
mechanical properties such as, tensile strength and flexural strength.

 To determine the optimum percent combination replacement of eggshell powder(ESP) and expanded
polystyrene foam (EPS).

 To produce a lightweight concrete bricks.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a kind of stable foam with low density, consisting of discrete air voids in
a polymer matrix. The polystyrene beads can easily be incorporated in mortar or concrete to produce
lightweight concrete, with a wide range of densities

Expanded polystyrene foam concrete bricks

According to Sohrab Veiseh and Ali A. Yousefi, Bricks are widely used in building construction as the
most common building materials in Iran. The heavy weight of bricks accounts for the great mass of
construction and thus causes more vulnerability against earthquake forces. In the present work, it is,
therefore, tried to reduce the density of the bricks, as well as improve thermal insulation properties.
Polystyrene foam is one of the substances that is added to the raw materials of bricks, as a pore-forming
material. Polystyrene foam is, therefore, used as a pore-forming material in the brick body for reducing
thermal conductivity and also density of brick which leads to mass reduction of building and improving its
resistance to earthquake forces. This is associated with decrease in compressive strength of the bricks. By
increasing the volume of the empty spaces, the weight of the bricks is reduced. This causes specific properties,
e.g. increased thermal resistance in the end product. Another advantage of light-weight bricks is reduced
transportation costs.

Siberian Constructing Technologies

Siberian Constructing Technologies is a well-known Russian company, founded in 2000. The company
designs technologies and makes certified equipment for production of modern constructing materials both for
small-scale and middle-scale business.

According to Siberian Constructing Technologies company Polystyrene (STATE STANDARD R 51263-

99) is a composite material consisting of Portland cement and its varieties, silica aggregate (silica sand or fly
ash from thermal power station), a porous filler (foamed polystyrene granules) and modifying agents (setting
accelerators, plasticizers, etc.). When we control the ratio of the components in the mixture we can get
different brands of polystyrene on the indices of the average density in the dry state from D150 to D600. As a
result, we get both constructional and insulation material. Due to good thermophysical properties of
polystyrene this material can be used as an independent system of thermal insulation of external walls instead
of using the so-called fastened insulation systems, where mineral wool, or a more popular solution
polystyrene is used as lagging. Polystyrene concrete combines high-quality technical, operational and cost
characteristics and is the best alternative to the traditional heat and sound-insulating materials.

Eggshell powder concrete bricks

Calcium rich egg shell is a poultry waste with Chemical composition nearly same as that of limestone.
Use of eggshell waste instead of natural lime to replace cement in concrete can have benefits like
minimizing use of cement, conserving natural lime and utilizing waste material.
According to a study eggshell waste generation in India, the United States and the United
Kingdom is 190000, 150000 and 11000 tonnes per annum respectively. Eggshell waste can be used as
fertilizer, animal feed ingredients and other such uses. However, majority of the eggshell waste is
deposited as landfills. Eggshell waste in landfills attracts vermin due to attached membrane and
causes problems associated with human health and environment. Few investigations were
conducted to use eggshell waste in civil engineering applications. Amu et al., 2005 studied eggshell
powder as a stabilizing material for improving soil properties.
