N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Lauren Hammond Date of Activity: 11/5-11/10 Faculty name: Mary O Connell

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

The professional activity I participated in was the free course offered by Yale on happiness. This

class was a 10-week course, but I completed about 5 weeks’ worth of content to reach my goal of

8 professional activity hours. The purpose of this course was to assess your own level of

wellbeing and find ways to increase your own level of happiness. The course helps students to

discover their own strengths and apply them for at least one week during the course.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

The course is held on campus at Yale University, as well as online at coursera.org. It is available

for anyone to take at any time through the online course. This is a 10-week and 20-hour course

that includes lectures, quizzes, and resources all aimed at improving the student’s baseline level

of happiness. I completed 5 weeks of the course and roughly 8-10 hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience was extremely valuable to me. I learned more than I expected about my own

level of happiness and aspects of my life that were contributing to this level of happiness. I

learned how social comparison could negatively affect the way I viewed myself and how social

media was one of the most harmful aspects affecting my happiness. I learned valuable ways that

are proven to increase happiness, including exercise and getting at least 7 hours of sleep per

night. I also was shocked to learn that many things in my life that I thought were making me

happy, were actually not. One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that we as humans are
always going to want more than we already have and learning to be grateful for our blessings is

extremely important to our overall happiness. I plan on completing the course, as I do feel as

though it is a valuable learning opportunity for optimal mental health, wellness and happiness.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

The lessons I have learned from this activity will be very beneficial throughout my nursing

career, as I will be aware of aspects of my job that contribute to my happiness. For example, I

will be able to recognize my own social comparison to those around me and notice that

comparing myself to others is harmful for my mental health and happiness. This course also

helped me realize that nursing will be a great field for increasing happiness levels, as constantly

helping others and providing service to others will increase overall happiness. Kindness, which is

a trait I will strive to possess as a nurse and person, is extremely important for improving

happiness as well. I can also use what I have learned to help my patients with their happiness

levels. I can encourage my patients to get enough sleep, exercise, and try to cut back on social

media to improve their feelings of happiness.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would definitely recommend this professional activity to anyone who is looking to improve

their happiness. I feel that this course could be valuable to anyone, as the lessons and strategies

provided aim to improve overall mood and quality of life. I believe that everyone can learn

something beneficial in this course and apply it to their own lives.
