The Johnsonian

Audience Analysis

The target audience for the Johnsonian is males and females who are interested in

learning what is currently happening on Winthrop University’s campus. Not only is the

newspaper for Winthrop students and faculty and staff, but it is also targeting to those outside of

campus such as the locals of the Rock Hill community. The audience of the newspaper has a

range of ages due to it being open to the public, but the main age group is between 18-24 years-

old if they are a student at Winthrop. The newspaper also targets those of all races, religions,

sexual orientations, gender, and income. Not only can you find the newspaper located across

campus for free, but it is also available online to those who are not able to access it on Winthrop

grounds.

Clubs and Organizations

Audience Analysis

Clubs and organizations are a huge asset to Winthrop University's campus. Winthrop

holds numerous organizations that spark the student's interests in their career field or just for fun.

Mass Communications organizations are for those who are interested in a career field in

communications or are just interested in the world of communications. These clubs and

organizations target audience is mainly students on campus. Though the Mass Communication

department targets those who are interested in the communications field, they also welcome

those who are apart of different majors. Most organizations accept all people of different races,

genders, sexual orientations, and religions between the ages of 18-24 years old as a Winthrop

student. Though most organizations accept all students, there are a few organizations such as the

Association for Women in Communications, who only target women, and Winthrop Association
of Black Journalists, who only target black students and other people of color, but they still

welcome anyone who would like to join.

Overlap

common when it comes to their target audience. Both of their main audience are students of

Winthrop University located in Rock Hill, SC. Since they are located on campus, students can

access the newspapers and many communication organizations at any time they would like. Both

are open to a variety of people such as males and females, those of different sexual orientations,

races, and age ranges between 18-24 years old. The audience who are interested in The

Johnsonian and Mass Communication organizations gain some form of knowledge while reading

and being apart

TIPCUPS

Timeliness- Winthrop Association of Black Journalists will add a different way to connect

through their mass member and potential members by starting a podcast in late October. No

official date has been released for when the podcast will be published.

Interest- WUABJ will be discussing current events that affect society and the organization so

that students can learn more about what WUABJ stands for and what they do on and off-campus.

Prominence- The story will involve the Winthrop Association of Black Journalists and their new

way of reaching out to students and those in the Rock Hill community through their podcasts.

Conflict- WUABJ will not be the only organization on campus that creates a podcast for

students on campus. Some organizations through Eagle Air, such as Trash Talk use podcasts as a

way to air their different topics of discussion.

Unusualness- Though, this is not the first organization that has come up with a podcast idea on

Winthrop University's campus, this is the first time for WUABJ to implement the idea of a

podcast in their organization. They will start the podcast with caution to learn more about what it

takes to create a podcast.

Proximity- The podcast will be aired on Spotify and Apple Music on an individual's personal

media devices so that it can reach a wide variety of audiences. If one person does not have

Spotify, then they would use Apple Music to access their podcast and vice versa. If an individual

has neither they will not have the chance to access the podcast.

Significance- This will be the first time WUABJ has created a podcast for students on campus.

This will give new students such as Freshman and transfer a chance to learn more about the

organization.
