COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITY 2: Exploring concepts concerning language


acquisition and alternative scenarios for acquiring first or second
languages.

Purpose:

The course is aimed at promoting the characterization, planning and implementation of a final
version of tutorials or videos for an identified group of English students.
This SECOND collaborative work activity corresponds to the characterization part where each
student will identify and analyze a target group of students for a further video or tutorial application.

Aims:

 To identify and analyze a target group of English students.


 To propose the skills and content needs of the target group and define the different
methodological strategies which will be used to develop the processes of acquisition of a
language. See Contents in Unit 1 and 2.
 To support the chosen strategy, methodology and contents by using language needs analysis
and specific theoretical postures. Check Units 1, 2 and 3.
 To define the strategies, methods and contents for the use of ICT as a condition of
implementation.
 To design a lesson plan, including ICT activities.

Topics:

1. Characterization of groups based on learning needs and success.


2. Language acquisition and learnability.
3. Second language needs and language learning by using ICT.
4. Universitary or Secondary Curricula for Teaching English in Colombia.
5. European Framework for Language Reference and language law.
6. Second language needs analysis.
7. Perspectives from Applied Linguistics and Cognitive Psychology.
8. Language learning in distance education and e-learning.

Product

To develop a 600 to 750 word paper describing the way skills will be developed and detailing
content needs of the target group:

1. Defining the different methodological strategies which will be used to develop processes of
acquisition of a language.

2. Supporting the chosen strategy, methodology and contents by using language needs
analysis and specific theoretical postures.

3. Defining strategies, methods and contents by using ICT as a condition of implementation.

4. Propose a detailed lesson plan including ICT activities and the referred proposals to be
implemented in the chosen group of students.

5. Implement the designed activity in the chosen target group and present the results of the
process.

6. Use APA style to elaborate your work and write references.

Instructions

1. Explore in your context (work or locality) a group of students in secondary or University


education level where you can provide a description of their learning needs in English as a first
or second Language.

2. Discuss the content topics, strategies and methodologies and choose one to be used for this
activity.

3. Incorporate the aims that are needed in this specific topic and the sequence to be followed in
achieving the intended goals in the process of learning/acquiring the language.

4. Define the methodology for planning the proposal of the task at hand.

5. Read each of your group partners’ work and provide feedback to each of their papers (50 words
per student).

6. Read your partners’ comments and make adjustments to your initial paper.

7. Post the final version of your 600-750 words document as the final product for this assignment.
