My school journey
Eleven-year-old Emily Jones lives on an island in the Orkneys. These
islands are in the north of Scotland. Emily’s island is very small and there
are only about thirty people living there. There are no children Emily’s age,
so she spends her time fishing and exploring. But what about school?
Emily can see her school from her garden. It’s a few kilometres away. The
problem is that the building is on a different island and the journey is very
long. She travels by bike, by bus and by ferry to get there. The part of the journey she prefers is the
ferry.
Like other children, Emily goes to school five days a week. The ferry sails every day in the summer,
and Monday to Saturday in the winter. It’s small and only has space for a few passengers and cars.
Sometimes Emily’s the only passenger, but the crew are friendly and Emily likes them.
Occasionally, the weather is bad and Emily arrives late for school. The teachers understand this and
classes like sport and music are never the first lesson. It’s usually maths, and the teachers give her
extra work or help her to catch up at lunchtime.
Sometimes the weather is fine in the morning, but then it changes in the afternoon. When this happens
Emily doesn’t go home. She sleeps at a friend’s house.
