EXTRAORAL SMILING Great Good Retake

1. Proper lighting, light background, proper backflash, no distracting shadows or light
hotspots
2. In focus on eyes, horizontally parallel with the interpupillary line
3. Top of head to collar bone with same enlargement ratio as other extraoral views
4. Hair back and attractive, off the forehead
5. Both ears equally visible
6. Balanced, upright, with line of focus straight onto face, natural head position
7. Eyes open, bright, looking at camera with no glasses
8. Full natural smile showing gingival display, arch shape, and alignment

EXTRAORAL PROFILE
Great Good Retake
1. Proper lighting, light background, proper backflash, no shadows behind the profile
or light hotspots
2. In focus on eyebrow
3. Top of head to collar bone with same enlargement ratio as the other extraoral views
4. Hair back and attractive, forehead and ear visible, hair or collar not behind profile
5. Balanced, upright, line of focus straight onto the profile, natural head position
6. Correct profile evident, correct occlusion, profile perpendicular to lens
7. Eye open, bright, looking straight ahead, with no glasses
8. Lips relaxed, gently closed. If lip strain, take second photo with lips apart

INTRAORAL FRONTAL
Great Good Retake
1. Proper lighting, no distracting shadows, proper exposure, no light hotspots
2. All of the teeth and gum tissue are as visible as possible and fill the frame, not much
retractor visible, lips retracted off of teeth and gum tissue, view is not distorted
3. Focus is on maxillary canines primarily, but whole field is in focus
4. Centered on the patient’s facial midline
5. Bite plane is horizontal
6. View is directed straight into plane of occlusion, not high, not low, and centered at
midline
7. Patient completely biting together with correct overjet, midlines, and posterior
occlusion
8. Shows the condition of the teeth and gum tissue without debris, excessive saliva,
dryness, or lip interference, or tongue interference

MAXILLARY OCCLUSAL VIEW

Great Good Retake
1. Proper lighting, no shadows, proper exposure, no light hotspots
2. All teeth are visible from terminal molar to terminal molar, minimal retractors and
lips, no face or nose visible, and view fills the frame
3. Lips must be retracted back off the incisors completely
4. No fog, scratches, or debris on mirror
5. Bite plane even to mirror horizontally, midline of palate centered, posterior balanced
evenly, view taken with mirror not touching second molars
6. View does not show edges of mirror, fingers, or shadows
7. Focus is on distal of first premolars with all teeth in focus
8. View is perpendicular to occlusal surface, showing arch form and alignment
9. Shows condition of teeth without excessive saliva, dryness, or debris

MANDIBULAR OCCLUSAL VIEW Great Good Retake

1. Proper lighting, no shadows, no light hotspots
2. All teeth are visible terminal molar to terminal molar, minimal retractors and lips, no
face, and view fills frame
3. Lips must be retracted back off incisors completely
4. No fog, scratches, or debris on mirror
5. Bite plane parallel to mirror horizontally, mirror midline at mandibular dental
midline, posterior balanced, mirror not touching second molars
6. View does not show edges of mirror, fingers, shadows, or tongue
7. Focus is on distal of first premolars with all teeth in focus
8. View is perpendicular to occlusal surface, showing arch form and alignment
9. Shows condition of teeth without excessive saliva, dryness, or debris

RIGHT LATERAL INTRAORAL

Great Good Retake
1. Proper lighting, no shadows, proper exposure, no light hotspots
2. Patient biting together with correct molar and canine occlusion
3. View shows at least the distal of maxillary lateral incisor back to at least the distal of
mandibular first molar, preferably to distal of the last molar
4. No mirror edges, retractors, mirror fog, or mirror scratches
5. Focus on distal of the maxillary first premolar with all teeth in focus
6. Bite plane is horizontal across the view
7. View directed straight onto plane of occlusion, not too high or too low
8. View is perpendicular to buccal surfaces as possible so Angle classification of
molars and canines is evident
