What should a nurse manager do to ensure that his/her message is understood?

Taking on a leadership role as a nurse manager requires more than clinical skills,
critical thinking, and strong communication. The job can be challenging for nurse
managers who are redefining their roles in healthcare and with their peers and
coworkers. Strong nursing leadership is needed to create practice environments and
work climates that are healthier and safer for both nurses and patients. Nurse
managers need strong communication and leadership skills. They should be adept at
coordinating resources and personnel and meeting goals and objectives. They must be
effective leaders who can strike a balance between working with the nursing staff and
the healthcare facility administrators. A nurse manager should:
 Speak slowly and clearly but not loudly.
 Maintain eye contact.
 When speaking or listening, turn your face and your body toward the patient,
and when possible sit next to them.
 Pay attention to nonverbal communication, such as body language, posture,
and gestures – both yours and your patient’s
 Demonstrate compassion, patience, and empathy
 Avoid medical jargon, foul language, slang, sarcasm, and deception
 Be sensitive to religious and cultural differences
 Consider how your words could be interpreted – or misinterpreted – by the
patient

These are, essential skills for any nurses to learn and improve. They support the definition and
goals of effective communication in nursing.
